Our Road Safety program has been on the move! Recently, in a two-day strategic planning session in Mexico, our team members Jacob Palley, Valentina Ochoa and Corina Alvarez focused on a strategic vision for 2025-2030, highlighting key milestones, priorities and specific roles for members of the coalition. Passing state legislation consistent with the General Law of Mobility & Road Safety (GLMRS) and adopting child restraint systems consistent with the GLMRS and global best practices were among the objectives addressed during the sessions. And in Colombia, Jacob Palley, Patricia Sosa, Gema Granados Hidalgo and Corina Alvarez hosted a two-day strategic planning session to support the coalition with its 2025 objectives. Additionally, they visited the Tree of Life, a project to commemorate road crash victims on World Day of Remembrance 2024 with GHAI's support. The Tree of Life is adorned with plaques that have the names of road crash victims. #RoadSafety

Grateful for the opportunity to moderate Public Health & Safety: Collaborating to Turn Advocacy into Action at the Police Assisted Addiction & Recovery Initiative’s National Law Enforcement Summit. Thank you to Sheriff Stacey Kincaid (Fairfax County, VA) and Sheriff Karl Leonard (Chesterfield County, VA) for sharing the real impact of programs that provide treatment for opioid use disorder inside jails—before release, when people are at their most vulnerable. Access to medication-assisted treatment isn’t just policy—it’s a life-saving intervention. That’s why we advocate for programs like these at the Global Health Advocacy Incubator. They help people realize a real chance at recovery, reducing overdose deaths and breaking cycles of addiction. I’m honored to be part of this urgent conversation and to work with leaders who are turning advocacy into action. Let’s keep pushing for solutions that save lives. #OverdosePrevention #PublicHealth #CriminalJusticeReform

I am so grateful for the leadership of the ATR caucus in working with us to pull together this panel that includes two former directors of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy and a group of nationally recognized experts, not only in the addiction policy and practice field, but who have transformed their powerful personal stories into a life of service in government and in their communities. #WeDoRecover !! Uganda is facing some of the highest drowning rates globally. Those most at risk are young men living among lakeside communities who carry out boating-related activities like fishing. That is why last week Vandana Shah, our Vice President for Health Systems Strengthening, engaged with Commissioner Robert Ntambi of the Ministry of Works & Transport - Maritime Administration (MoWT), the Uganda Police, Makerere University School of Public Health (MakSPH), Reach A Hand Uganda and other key partners to advance policy discussions on drowning prevention and maritime safety. Key takeaways: ✅ Adoption of maritime safety regulations will help operationalize safety standards, vessel licensing, and enforcement mechanisms. ✅ Stakeholder collaboration remains vital - CSOs have been engaged from the start, with Makerere University proposing a community-based surveillance approach using Village Health Teams. ✅ Domestic resource mobilization will help make drowning prevention sustainable. ✅ Public awareness & enforcement as well as training for coxswains and vessel operators need to be prioritized. GHAI continues to support Uganda’s drowning prevention efforts for: 🚢 Strengthening government leadership in water safety policy implementation 📊 Enhancing data collection & community surveillance for informed decision-making 🎙️ Amplifying public awareness & engagement to drive systemic change #DrowningPrevention #Uganda

Elizabeth (Libby) Jones, program director of our Overdose Prevention Initiative, sheds light on a critical issue: for too many Americans, the easiest place to access addiction treatment is behind bars. When jails and prisons provide medications for opioid use disorder, the risk of overdose after release drops by 85%, yet only 12% of facilities offer these life-saving treatments. While jail-based care can be effective, it should be a last resort—not the only option. Everyone deserves access to addiction treatment in their own communities. Read more in The New York Times.

The solution to hunger isn't producing more food. The solutions are political. Here are six ways to address the problem: 1️⃣ Tackle poverty and income inequality. People with money do not go hungry. 🥣 2️⃣ Prevent conflict. Wars can drive famines. 🪖 3️⃣ Break up Big Food and Big Ag corporations. Many have become monopolies, controlling far too much of the world's food production. 💰 4️⃣ Eat locally. Reduce dependence on imported foods. 🧺 5️⃣ Shift agricultural practices to withstand the climate crisis. 🌾 6️⃣ Implement food policies to benefit people not Big Meat and Biofuel lobbies. 🐷
🚨 The world produces more food per person than ever before—yet 700 million people remain chronically undernourished.🌾 🥣 #Hunger is about power, inequality, & broken systems.⚖️ So why are Nobel laureates calling for a ‘moonshot’ to boost food production? Hunger is a political choice. 🔗 Read more: https://lnkd.in/etG7htfX
