Excited to share that last Friday, I had the opportunity to lead and host the very first episode of "Mentes en Español" with the theme "Catalisis y su Futuro en la Ciencia en Español" 🎙 In this episode, I had the pleasure of interviewing Dr. Yomaira Pagan-Torres and Dr. Hansel Montalvo-Castro who shared their experiences and insights on catalysis and the importance of discussing science in Spanish. I’m truly thrilled about this opportunity to help bring science to broader audiences and promote conversations in our native language and thanks to AEGIQ UPRM - Asociación de Estudiantes Graduados de Ingeniería Química for trusting me to lead this initiative. #UPRM #MentesEnEspañol #ScienceInSpanish #Catalysis #STEM #ChemicalEngineering

I'm thrilled to share our recent publication, "Ammonia Adsorption at High Temperature and Pressure Using Sodium Containing Aluminosilicates: Selectivity over Nitrogen and Multicycle Working Capacities," in Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research. Using sodium-containing zeolites, we evaluated ammonia adsorption under temperature and pressure conditions relevant to the Haber-Bosch industrial process. We calculated selectivity, evaluated the materials’ multicycle performance, and conducted Monte Carlo molecular simulations to analyze the material's behavior in binary ammonia-nitrogen mixtures. We hope this study will encourage the consideration of adsorption as a promising option for optimizing the separation stage of the Haber-Bosch process. I want to express my gratitude to all the collaborators involved in this work, particularly to my advisor, Prof. Arturo Hernández-Maldonado.

Today, we hosted Prof. Paola Baldaguez Medina during the graduate seminar at University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez Chemical Engineering Department. Dr. Baldaguez gave an insightful seminar on ongoing environmental and technical challenges related to PFAS, which are toxic polymeric compounds that we have unfortunately misused and mismanaged. The preservation of Puerto Rico’s water sources is at stake, and Dr. Baldaguez research lab is tackling the challenge of developing energy efficient methods for successful separation and degradation of PFAS from water. In addition, she is leveraging her expertise with PFAS to develop wearable technologies for biosening and environmental monitoring. Thanks to all that attended and participated in such insightful seminar. Stay tuned for more! College of Engineering - UPRM

Spotlight on a piece of equipment being used by the CMaT community! This microscope from Etaluma, Inc. currently being used in the Maribella Domenech lab at the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez. Etaluma, Inc. is focused on bringing high resolution, automated microscopes to more markets and a wider range of users. The lab has been using the microscope for an experiment regarding Testbed 3, in which Carlos A. Barreto Gamarra (picture 1) is studying the effects of doxorubicin (a cancer treatment that is known to cause oxidative stress in the heart) on the mitochondria of cardiomyocytes differentiated from hiPSCs in the lab. Using MitoTracker Red, they were able to visualize and track mitochondrial changes and monitor the beating patterns of the cardiomyocytes over time. Etaluma’s microscope in the incubator has been incredibly helpful in capturing this data.

I am thrilled to share that on December 2nd, I successfully defended my Ph.D. thesis proposal titled "Study the Effect of the Added Water and Binder Type on the Granulation and Compaction into Tablets of Ipomoea batatas and Artocarpus altilis Granular Materials", under the mentorship of Dr. Carlos Velazquez. Eager to see where this research and the opportunities ahead will take us in the coming year!
