Well, we feel old. Although we have had a few name changes, we have been around since 1910 and have made replacement wheels for some of the oldest truck models. Are you a history junkie like us? Our archive of wheel blueprints is quite extensive and would impress a museum! ------------------------------------------------------------------------- A post from our friends over at American Truck Historical Society #FridayFocus: Selden Motor Truck Sales Corporation A pioneer in the transportation world, George B. Selden filed the first U.S. automobile patent in 1879. His design never made it to production, but the New York-based inventor used the patent to collect royalties from early automakers. That led to a legal battle with Henry Ford—a fight Selden eventually lost. By then, though, Seldon had moved on, turning his attention to building trucks Selden trucks quickly gained a reputation for durability, and during World War I, the company built over 1,000 Liberty trucks for the U.S. military. By 1919, its heaviest models had a 3.5-ton payload, and by the mid-1920s, Selden expanded into 5- and 7-ton trucks as well as buses. For light-duty needs, there was the "Selden Special" which the comapny promoted as “profitable wherever speed, economy, and dependability are required.” Featuring a versatile "Five-in-One" body, they quickly converted for various uses. They functioned as stakebeds, dump beds, or general haulers, with sides and a tailgate creating an open express body. A manual hoist enabled easy unloading of bulk materials like grain or coal. Rack sides allowed for bulky loads, livestock transport, or delicate produce, with tiered platforms preventing damage. A tarpaulin cover, supported by iron pipe bows and oak battens, provided weather protection. This adaptability made them ideal for profitable contract work. Selden's later models featured six-cylinder LeRoi engines, reflecting advancements in truck power and performance. However, like many early truck builders, Selden struggled with economic challenges, leading to a merger with Hahn Motor Truck Company in 1930. Though the Selden name faded, its legacy remains a piece of early trucking history. _____ Keep On Trucking with ATHS!
