Loss and Damage: Turning Words Into Action ⛈️ "Loss and damage funding must prioritize the communities that suffer most, yet COP29's $700 million pledge is far from sufficient." 🌍 The African continent stands at the frontline of climate crisis, bearing a disproportionate burden of environmental devastation despite contributing least to global greenhouse gas emissions. COP29 in Azerbaijan marked a critical moment for climate justice, but the outcomes reveal the stark disparity between rhetoric and meaningful action. 🌍 Africa's climate vulnerability is profound. From the drought-stricken Horn of Africa to the flood-ravaged regions of West Africa, communities are experiencing unprecedented environmental challenges. The $700 million pledge represents a mere drop in the ocean compared to the estimated hundreds of billions needed to address the continent's climate-induced losses. 🌍 The Santiago Network's potential headquarters in Nairobi symbolizes more than a geographical choice—it's a strategic move towards centering African voices in global climate adaptation and resilience strategies. This initiative represents a crucial step in ensuring that loss and damage discussions are not just global conversations, but locally meaningful interventions. 🌍 African nations have consistently advocated for a more equitable approach to climate financing. COP29's outcomes, while showing incremental progress, still fall short of the transformative change required. The continent demands not just financial support, but a fundamental restructuring of how climate crisis responses are conceptualized and implemented. 🌍 Africa called for Nairobi to host the Santiago Network headquarters, ensuring equitable access to support. It's time the global community steps up to deliver meaningful results. 📢 Join the conversation—what's your take on the pace of global response to loss and damage? 📊 How can loss and damage financing be more effective? 1️⃣ Direct grants to affected communities 2️⃣ Faster fund disbursement mechanisms 3️⃣ Dedicated regional offices 4️⃣ Stronger accountability frameworks 5️⃣ In your own words #LossAndDamage #AfricaFirst #ClimateJustice GIZ African Union Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH African Union AGNES Africa UNEP-WCMC UNFCCC UN PACJACI YAF Africa Idriss Adoum Idriss Abeng Lucky Eugene Nforngwa Fund for responding to Loss and Damage (FRLD)

During #COP29 in Azerbaijan, the spotlight was on solar energy, a key solution for ensuring sustainable and secure energy access, especially in Africa. As Dr. Augustine B Njamnshi, President of Technical and Policy Affairs at the Pan African Climate Justice Alliance PACJA and Executive Director of the African Coalition For Sustainable Energy and Access highlighted: "Energy in our context is not just for lighting. The mistake we make is having a limited view of energy. The disparity in energy needs is much more pronounced for women. Access does not depend on the availability of energy resources in the community, but on the accessibility of this energy to those who need it most." The discussions at #COP29 may be over, but the actions to make energy accessible to all continue on the ground. We must keep pushing for energy to be seen not as a luxury, but a right for every African, especially women, who face the greatest challenges in accessing it. #COP29 #SolarEnergy #EnergyAccess #EnergySecurity #Africa #ClimateJustice #SustainableEnergy

"A just transition for Africa must address energy poverty, enable green industrialization, and support sustainable resource use." For 🌍 Africa, a just transition is not just a climate goal—it is a matter of economic and social survival. Over 600 million people across the continent still lack access to electricity, while millions more rely on unsustainable energy sources. Bridging this gap requires bold action to expand clean energy access, modernize infrastructure, and create millions of green jobs. At hashtag #COP29, the call for a fair and inclusive transition was clear. African leaders emphasized that a just transition cannot ignore the disparities between the Global North and the Global South. Developed countries must remove barriers such as the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), which risks penalizing African exports, and must instead support Africa’s efforts to industrialize sustainably. Here’s why this is critical: 1️⃣ Energy Poverty 💡 Sub-Saharan Africa accounts for more than 75% of the global population without electricity access. A just transition means prioritizing affordable, reliable, and clean energy for all—without forcing Africa to choose between climate action and economic development. 2️⃣ Green Industrialization ☘️ Africa is rich in natural resources, but value addition and industrial processes remain underdeveloped. A just transition must focus on building industries that create jobs, reduce poverty, and drive economic growth—all while reducing emissions and environmental impact. 3️⃣ Trade Inequities ❗ Measures like CBAM and other unilateral trade policies are shaping global markets in ways that disadvantage African economies. To ensure a just transition, these mechanisms must reflect Africa’s circumstances and include provisions for technology transfer, capacity building, and equitable terms of trade. 4️⃣ Finance for Transition 💰 The financial burden of transitioning to clean energy and sustainable industries is immense. Africa needs substantial support in the form of grants, concessional loans, and investment partnerships to fund projects that ensure both growth and sustainability. A just transition for Africa is possible, but it requires global solidarity. Fair financing mechanisms, policy support, and technology access are non-negotiable to achieve this vision. What in your opinion is the biggest hurdle to Africa’s just transition? 1️⃣ Lack of finance 2️⃣ Policy barriers 3️⃣ Energy infrastructure gaps 4️⃣ Trade restrictions hashtag #JustTransition hashtag #AfricaRising hashtag #SustainableFuture hashtag #Adaptation hashtag #ClimateFinance GIZ African Union Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH African Development Bank Group African Development Bank Group GIZ African Union PACJACI YAF Africa Idriss Adoum Idriss UNEP-WCMC The African Climate Foundation African Risk Capacity (ARC) Group AGNES Africa Soha Benchekroun European Commission Zita Wilks

The $1.3 Trillion Call 🌍 "Africa’s voice echoed loud and clear at #COP29 in Baku, demanding an ambitious $1.3 trillion annually for climate finance. This is not just a number—it represents Africa’s fight for a just transition, resilience, and prosperity." 🌍 Africa is at the forefront of the climate crisis. Our farmers face unpredictable seasons, communities endure devastating floods and droughts, and economies suffer under the weight of mounting losses. COP29's $1.3 trillion demand was built on a foundation of evidence—reflecting the urgent need for grant-based financing to support adaptation, loss and damage, mitigation, and capacity building across the continent. Yet, the $300 billion annual commitment made at COP29 falls woefully short. Here's how: 1️⃣ #Adaptation Africa requires an estimated $387 billion annually to adapt to rising temperatures, failing crops, and erratic rainfall. The $300 billion global pledge lacks the dedicated allocation to address these adaptation challenges, leaving farmers, cities, and vulnerable communities without the tools to build resilience. 2️⃣ Loss and Damage With only $700 million pledged, the Loss and Damage Fund continues to symbolize delayed action. The lack of prioritization for African communities, combined with slow fund disbursement, underscores a fundamental gap in the global commitment to addressing the direct impacts of climate disasters. 3️⃣ #Mitigation Africa contributes less than 4% of global emissions, yet bears the brunt of climate change. The continent's transition to renewable energy and sustainable industries remains underfunded. Without adequate mitigation financing, Africa faces mounting challenges in reducing reliance on fossil fuels while ensuring access to affordable energy. 4️⃣ Capacity Building From technical training to technology transfer, capacity-building efforts are the backbone of climate resilience. However, without sufficient funding, African institutions and communities are left without the means to implement critical climate strategies. 💡 What does this mean for Africa? The $300 billion pledge, spread across all developing countries, is a drop in the ocean compared to the continent's growing needs. Africa demands action, not token gestures. Every dollar underfunded today amplifies future costs—for economies, ecosystems, and human lives. 📊 What is the most critical use for Africa’s climate finance? 1️⃣ Adaptation 2️⃣ Loss and Damage 3️⃣ Mitigation 4️⃣ Capacity Building 5️⃣ All of the Above #AfricaAdaptation #COP29Outcomes #ClimateFinance
