  • A 2 Min Read: How AMREC Classifies Minerals and Energy Resources: A Comprehensive Guide The African Minerals and Energy Resources Classification and Management System (AMREC) is a groundbreaking framework developed by the African Minerals Development Centre to harmonize how Africa’s mineral & energy resources are categorized. AMREC is tailored to Africa’s unique challenges, like informal mining, sustainable development needs, & economic equity. Here’s how AMREC works: The Three Dimensions of AMREC Classification AMREC uses a three-dimensional approach: geological confidence, Economic viability and environmental & social readiness . These dimensions ensure resources are evaluated holistically—not just for their economic value, but for social and environmental impact: A. Geological Confidence (G Dimension) “How much do we know about the resource?” AMREC categorizes resources based on geological certainty, moving from exploration to extraction: G1 (Measured): Resources confirmed by detailed exploration (e.g., drilling, sampling). Example: A gold deposit in South Africa with mapped boundaries and verified quantity. G2 (Indicated): Resources estimated with moderate confidence, based on preliminary data. Example: A cobalt reserve in the Democratic Republic of Congo with initial drill results. G3 (Inferred): Resources predicted but not yet proven. Example: Potential lithium deposits in Zimbabwe identified via satellite surveys. B. Economic Viability (E Dimension) “Can we extract this resource profitably and responsibly?” AMREC assesses whether extraction is feasible under current conditions: E1 (Commercially Viable): Resources that can be mined profitably today. Example: Nigeria’s oil reserves with existing infrastructure. E2 (Potentially Viable): Resources requiring future tech or investment. Example: Namibia’s offshore natural gas needing advanced extraction methods. E3 (Non-Viable): Resources too costly or risky to extract. Example: Remote diamond deposits in the Central African Republic with security challenges. C. Environmental and Social Readiness (S Dimension) “Will extraction harm people or the planet?” AMREC evaluates sustainability and community impact: S1 (Approved): Resources meeting AU sustainability standards (e.g., minimal environmental harm, community consent). Example: Botswana’s diamond mines with water recycling systems. S2 (Conditionally Approved): Resources needing mitigation measures. Example: Ghanaian bauxite mines requiring reforestation plans. S3 (Unapproved): Resources posing severe risks. Example: Mercury-dependent artisanal gold mining in Mali. • AMREC is Africa’s way of sorting minerals and energy resources—like organizing Africa's minerals so everyone knows what’s available and how much it’s worth! Think of it as a universal “label maker” for lithium, cobalt, gold, oil, and more. By using global standards, AMREC makes sure every country reports resources the same way. This builds trust with investors, avoids conflicts over who owns what, and ensures profits from mining fund schools, hospitals, and roads—not just big companies. It’s all about fairness, transparency, and making Africa’s resources work for everyone. Want to know more? • #AMDCMedia The Africa Mining Vision (AMV) emphasises gender equality as a critical component of a sustainable and inclusive mining sector. The AMV acknowledges that women are disproportionately marginalised in the mining industry, particularly in terms of access to resources, participation in decision-making, and economic opportunities. To drive change, the AMV champions 1. Recognizing Women’s Role in Mining 2. Addressing Gender Inequalities 3. Economic Empowerment of Women 4. Gender-Sensitive Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) 5. Environmental & Social Protections for Women 6. Institutionalising Gender in Mining Governance The African Minerals Development Centre (AMDC) collaborates with women in mining associations across Africa, and their overarching continental body, the Association of Women in Mining in Africa (AWIMA), to promote gender-inclusive mining policies and opportunities. In celebration of International Women's Day 2025, and in alignment with the theme, "Accelerate Action – Collectively, we can Accelerate Action for Gender Equality," #AWIMA, in collaboration with the #AMDC, will host a Virtual Fireside Chat, sponsored by Women In Mining Ghana (WIM Ghana). • Regulations designed to ensure responsible mineral sourcing are inadvertently sidelining artisanal miners—the backbone of Africa’s mineral wealth. As Western nations race to secure battery minerals for the green energy transition, policies like the OECD Due Diligence Guidance and the Dodd-Frank Act are forcing many small-scale miners into the informal sector. The resulting tension between large-scale operators and artisanal groups undermines local livelihoods and stifles the potential for a more inclusive mining sector. Our latest policy brief urges a rethink. Instead of solely favouring large mining companies, there must be policies that actively integrate artisanal miners into formal supply chains. This approach would not only secure sustainable mineral production but also empower local communities, ensuring Africa’s mining future is both dynamic and equitable. 📘 NEW POLICY BRIEF: The Emerging Artisanal & Large-Scale Mining Interface in Africa’s Green Minerals Sector 🌍🔬 AMDC’s new brief reveals how Africa’s lithium, cobalt, and copper are caught in a tug-of-war. As global demand for critical minerals (lithium, cobalt, copper) surges, Africa faces growing tensions between artisanal miners and industrial operators. This AMDC brief analyzes how Western policies marginalize ASM communities, while China’s flexible sourcing reshapes supply chains. Case studies from Ghana, DRC, Zimbabwe, and Nigeria highlight risks of conflict and inequity. A must-read for policymakers aiming to balance sustainability with inclusive growth. 📊 Co-published with Gavin Hilson #SustainableMining #CriticalMinerals #AMDCMedia #GreenMinerals #Minerals

  • AMREC-PARC is a framework that standardizes how mineral resources are reported across Africa. At the 60th Nigeria Mining and Geosciences Society Conference, Mr. Tunde Arisekola FNMGS (AMDC), introduced the Pan‑African Resource Reporting Code (PARC). When combined with the African Mineral Resource Classification (AMREC)—which sets guidelines for accurately classifying mineral resources—these tools help ensure clear, consistent reporting. This, in turn, empowers artisanal and small‑scale mining by boosting transparency, building investor trust, and fostering growth. Industry experts sat on a panel to discuss the relevance of PARC to Artisanal and Small Scale Mining on the continent. They included AMDC's Mkhululi N Ncube, Prof. Theophile Ndousgsa Mbarga, Prof. Prosper NUDE , Cristelle Nikoh Mefeugeng and Prof. Olugbenga Okunlola with the highly technical business session moderated by the president of the NMGS, Prof A S Olatunji. AMREC-PARC will shape Africa’s mining future. To read more on AMREC-PARC visit: https://lnkd.in/dvTWjeeB #AMDCMedia #ASM #AMDC
