#OnThisDay in 1991, Operation Desert Storm began. MH-53 helicopter aircrews from the 1st Special Operations Wing escorted Army Apache helicopters on a raid to destroy Iraqi radar sites near the border of Saudi Arabia. This Air Force Special Operations Forces-led combat mission was the first of the conflict and earned its crews the Mackay Trophy. You can see the MH-53 in person at the Hurlburt Field Memorial Air Park and learn more about it here: https://lnkd.in/eHeCtMD2 #AFSOC | #AirCommandos | #SpecialOperations

A small group of retired AC-130H Spectre gunship crews recently returned to Hurlburt Field to recognize this milestone and reflect on the operation that began in the early hours of Dec. 20, 1989. Their experiences highlight the complexity and lasting impact of missions that shape military history. Learn more about their memories and the lessons that endure: https://lnkd.in/ecw-jHdD
