Thrilled to have attended the AI LA Responsible AI Symposium last Thursday! The event featured an incredible lineup of speakers and thought-provoking discussions on the future of AI and its impact on society. The highlight for me was not only the amazing panel speakers but meeting Dr. Safiya Noble, Ph.D., who is one of my greatest academic role models. As a student studying computer science, her incredible book Algorithms of Oppression made such a huge impact on my academic career and future goals, as well as compelling me to acknowledge the extent of algorithmic bias and it’s devastating effects on marginalized communities. It was absolutely surreal to meet her in person, and I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity. I also would like to thank the panelists for their invaluable contributions to these challenging yet crucial conversations. Their insights were not only enlightening but also deeply thought-provoking, and have definitely made an impact on my views regarding AI in the modern world. Special thanks to the panelists from the "AI and Democracy" panel: Sneha Deo, Michael Morgenstern (he/they), Alessia Zornetta, and Patricio Utz. And to the panelists from the "Responsible AI Development" panel: Aida Rahmattalabi, Salima Bhimani, PhD, Scot Pansing, and Judd Rosenblatt. Lastly, a big thank you to AI LA for organizing such a fantastic event and facilitating important conversations around responsible AI development. I’m looking forward to more events like this! #AI #ResponsibleAI #EthicalAI #WomenInTech

The goal of responsible AI is to create systems that benefit a wider range of people, places, and contexts in products, services and solutions. This requires a strategic approach that fosters a symbiotic relationship between unprecedented innovation and human-centered change. I was honored to join the esteemed panel at the AI LA "Responsible AI Symposium 2024" last week to share my insights on this very topic. It was a fantastic opportunity to engage in thoughtful discussions with fellow experts and learn from their diverse perspectives. Here are some points shared by my fellow panelists (paraphrased): Scot Pansing: Products need to be reflective of values that increase responsibility Judd Rosenblatt: Ensuring human agency in the midst of huge AI evolutions is pivotal Aida Rahmattalabi: Continue to invest in AI research that focuses on mitigating harms A big thank you to AI LA for creating such a generative and welcoming space to explore the range of approaches to Responsible AI. It's inspiring to be part of a growing tech ecosystem in Southern California, committed to building an AI future for all. #ResponsibleAI #AIethics #LAAISymposium #TechForGood #AISocal

Thursday evening, I attended the AI LA Responsible AI Symposium at Loyola Marymount University in Playa Vista. A big thank you to Safiya Noble, Ph.D. and all of the panelists for sparking transformative discussions on the ethical dimensions of AI. These conversations were tremendously insightful particularly those that surrounded how search engines and AI algorithms reinforce racism and inequity, and how we can move towards a more technologically equitable future. As always the AI LA team put on an incredible event that fostered meaningful dialogue - Todd Terrazas, Dhruva K., Filip Graniczny

It was great attending AI LA’s recent Responsible AI symposium at Loyola Marymount University. As someone taking a pivot towards a realistic view of AI, it was a good opportunity to get speaker and audience perspectives on developing responsible AI, be it more “e/acc” driven or otherwise. A pleasure meeting some of the speakers, organizers, and fellow attendees! #artificialintelligence #responsibleai

Helping journalists save time without sacrificing quality 📝✨

What are the elements of responsible AI? Should we hope for systems that are built on the principles of transparency, privacy and fairness? Or should we be happy with, as one person put it, “a version of that that allows [humans] to continue to exist”? 😬 Really enjoyed hearing from both optimists and pessimists at a great AI LA event last night.
