AIA College of Fellows
Architecture and Planning
A passion for doing more. Promote research, scholarly work, and mentor young architects & emerging professionals.
About us
Founded in 1952, the College of Fellows is composed of members of the Institute who are elevated to Fellowship by a jury of their peers. Fellowship is one of the highest honors the AIA can bestow upon a member. Elevation to Fellowship not only recognizes the achievement of the architect as an individual, but also elevates before the public and the profession those architects who have made significant contributions to architecture and to society. The AIA College of Fellows seeks to stimulate a sharing of interests among Fellows, promote the purposes of AIA, advance the profession of architecture, mentor young architects, and be of ever-increasing service to society. AIA Fellows are recognized with the AIA’s highest membership honor for their exceptional work and contributions to architecture and society. Architects who have made significant contributions to the profession and society and who exemplify architectural excellence can become a member of the AIA College of Fellows. Only 3% of the AIA members have this distinction.

AIA Grand Rapids THRIVE’s inaugural cohort gathered on 9/10 for their second event – a Mentor/ Mentee Roundtable Discussion hosted by the wonderful team at Progressive Companies. The evening kicked off with guest speaker Carl Sergio, AIA / NOMA / NCARB / LEED, who shared his valuable insights on career progression and overcoming mid-career plateaus. After his talk, participants broke into smaller groups for in-depth discussions, where vulnerability and honesty led to meaningful conversations for everyone involved. A heartfelt thank you to the AIA College of Fellows for their funding support and the AIA Chicago Bridge Mentorship Program for their invaluable guidance in making this initiative possible – and for sharing co-director Carl Sergio with us! AIA GR THRIVE connects mentees with seasoned industry experts, helping to expand networks, offer work-life balance strategies, and provide career advancement guidance. By bridging the gap between experience and ambition, THRIVE fosters professional growth and opportunity. Applications for the 2025 Cohort will open in January. Interested in learning more now? Contact THRIVE co-directors Sarah Carter and Anne Doornbos, AIA, LEED AP at aiagrandrapids.thrive@gmail.com.
