  • In honor of 🎊 Native American Heritage Month 🎊, we are excited to share with you another enriching presentation from October's vibrant #AIGADesignConf 🗣️ Challenging Indigenous Misrepresentation Through Design 🔸 Presenter: Tyra Maney, Designer, Museum of the Cherokee People (MotCP) When you think of Native Americans, do natural history dioramas, earth tones, ancient artifacts, and papyrus come to mind? This imagery, often rooted in clichés and tropes, was born out of misrepresentation. For centuries, museum design—ranging from collateral to billboards to merchandise—has told Indigenous stories for us, not by us. But now, Cherokee people are reclaiming their narratives through self-representation in the museum world. 🦬 In 2023, under new leadership, the former Museum of the Cherokee Indian adopted an inclusive name and contemporary rebrand. Museum of the Cherokee People (ᏣᎳᎩ ᎢᏗᏴᏫᏯᎯ ᎢᎦᏤᎵ ᎤᏪᏘ ᎠᏍᏆᏂᎪᏙᏗ) infused an authentic #Cherokee perspective into its brand identity under the creative direction of staff designer 🎨 Tyra Maney (Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, Diné). In this session, Tyra delves into her experience as a one-person design team creating a contemporary visual identity for a 75-year-old institution. Learn how design, when authentically rooted in culture, can push the boundaries of Indigenous representation.  Takeaways: 1️⃣ The importance of hiring Native designers to tell Native stories—and doing the work to find the right designer/artist 2️⃣ How Native designers incorporate a sense of place into their work, using specificity to tell more compelling design stories, from branding to photography to web design and beyond 3️⃣ Building relationships with Indigenous communities to unlearn preconceived notions and foster authentic representation. 🎤 About the Speaker Tyra Maney is an enrolled citizen of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians with Diné heritage on her maternal side. She hails from the 🪶 Yellowhill Community of the Qualla Boundary. At the Museum of the Cherokee People, Tyra co-curated and designed ᏗᎵᎬᏚᎶ Many Faces: A Cherokee Mask Exhibit and designed A Living Language: Cherokee Syllabary and Contemporary Art and Disruption. Her most meaningful achievement was creating the Museum’s rebrand in October 2023. She recently served as a cultural advisor for The Creator’s Game, a temporary exhibition within Native Truths: Our Voices, Our Stories at the Field Museum. ▶️ Play our 2-minute clip for Tyra's insights and culture perspectives as a Native American designer. 🤿 Dive into this fascinating presentation at https://lnkd.in/e7y7aR2Y 🤩 Has a Native American artist inspired you?
