Captain Theresa Claiborne made history in 1981 when she became the first African American woman to become a U.S. Air Force pilot. Throughout her career in the Air Force, Claiborne became the first Black woman to serve as a command pilot and instructor for the KC-135, a mid-air refueling aircraft. Aireon is proud to commemorate Black History Month and to honor the contributions of pioneering aviators of color, as part of our ongoing dedication to diversity, equity and inclusion efforts in our company.

Born in Kingston, Jamaica, William Robinson Clarke became the first person of African descent to fly for Britain. He enlisted in the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) on July 26, 1915, initially serving as an air mechanic. In December 1916, he was accepted for pilot training in England and was promoted to Sergeant upon completion. Aireon is proud to commemorate Black History Month and to honor the contributions of pioneering aviators of color, as part of our ongoing dedication to diversity, equity and inclusion efforts in our company.

Lucean Arthur Headen was among the first known African American aviators and was a prolific inventor. Amongst several inventions and innovations, Headen addressed the critical issue of de-icing aircraft wings and propellers, a major challenge in aviation due to the freezing temperatures at high altitudes.
