MSC has ordered four 21,700 TEU vessels, with options for an additional four. The pace of expansion of both fleet and orderbook from MSC is continuing at a rapid clip. Compared to the sitution at the beginning of the Red Sea crisis, their operated fleet has grown some 800,000 TEU equal to 13.8% growth. And this in a period where global demand (measured in TEU loaded) grew 6.2% Their orderbook has grown by slightly more than 600,000 TEU in the same period, equal to a growth of the orderbook itself of 42%. Today is day 461 of the Red Sea crisis. No changes. The following is not meant as a political statement, but simply a heads-up related to possible impact on the supply chain related to actions taken by the US government. Federal workers in the US have received an email with a deadline Monday evening to explain what work they have been doing in the past week. The email simply states the deadline within which to comply, whereas Elon Musk on X stated that failure to comply will be taken as a resignation of the individual employee. Several unions representing federal workers have already stated they would see this as unlawful terminations and plan to fight it in court. Irrespective of whether you find the mass-layoffs done in recent weeks are justified or not, the reality is that federal workers find themselves in a work environment where their job security has deteriorated sharply. It has surely not gone unnoticed how employees in multiple agencies in recent weeks were fired, only for the responsible DOGE teams to subsequently realize they had fired critical staff and then try to re-hire the same people. One thing is doing mass-layoffs which will of course never be a popular exercise. But the manner in which it is done can have an extremely large impact on the productivity and morale of the remaining staff. Under the current conditions I would not be surprised to see some of the most qualified people leave their positions to find new jobs elsewhere. Even if new employees are then hired, training takes time, and productivity of key agencies could drop below the levels needed to function properly. Federal workers are not allowed to strike, which otherwise could be a reaction. But what would the government do if a million federal workers decided to stage a strike or go-slow action regardless? The actions taken by the US administration over the past 4 weeks are unprecedented in scope and scale and challenges the legal framework in the US. There is no reason to believe that the inevitable push-back will not be equally unprecedented. Supply chain stakeholders should include a risk that critical federal functions such as for example customs handling could slow to a snail’s pace and cripple the supply chain. Not because of anyone targeting the supply chain, but as a consequence of employee dissatisfaction with the process they are being subjected to, combining layoffs with people leaving in favor of other jobs, resulting in a capacity shortage.

Envirotainer, supplier of #coldchain containers and real-time monitoring technology for global #pharmaceutical transport, has launched the RelEye RKN unit. The RelEye RKN is the lightest of its class, reducing CO2 emissions per shipment, improving sustainability metrics and supporting pharma companies to meet their net zero goals. The unit has an increased loading height, allowing for more products per shipment, and 130+ hours of autonomous operation to protect cargo even in the event of unforeseen delays or supply chain disruptions. Six airlines have already approved it for use and Envirotainer is working with pharmaceutical companies and logistics providers to support their qualification process. At the end of last year, Gerhard from our UAE office partnered with Jason in the UK office to coordinate the charter of a Boeing 747 Freighter to transport a Trent 1000 aircraft engine from Africa to Singapore. From sourcing the ideal aircraft to coordinating with our ground support partners at Swissport - ensuring the right cranes, lifting spreaders, and specialized equipment were in place - every detail was meticulously planned. Meanwhile, Tyrone from our South African office was on-site overseeing operations to ensure a smooth execution, making this complex mission a success. In an interview with AJOT, Rao argues that the Trump administration’s criticism of Chinese investments in terminals accessing the Panama Canal misses the point: China is investing in new container terminal operations around the world and the United States is not.
