Creators of Diamond Cooling, a new solution for unmatched thermal management and performance in AI and Space

About us

At Akash Systems, Inc. (San Francisco, CA), we design and make some of the world's most energy efficient RF Power Amplifiers, and the CubeSats (small LEO orbital satellites). Our innovation is made possible by the breakthrough materials we use: gallium nitride (GaN)-on-Diamond wafers. In GaN-on-Diamond, the hottest parts of a transistor is brought to within tens of nanometers of diamond - the world's most thermally conductive material. The effect is a cooler state of operation - dramatically improving energy efficiency, and reducing a system's size, weight, and operating costs.

We have been investors in Akash Systems since they launched in early 2017! We’ve been to (actual) space and back quietly, working together behind closed doors for years, and I’m so proud that they’re finally getting their time to shine. Thank you to the tech legend, Sarah Guo for having Felix Ejeckam and Ty Mitchell on her show, No Priors. Here’s the full, super compelling interview! https://lnkd.in/dik9VKBm I also want to thank Mark Cuban and our Backstage Capital syndicate investors for helping Backstage make one of our largest investments ever, in Akash in 2020, under the toughest circumstances.

What are we doing with Diamonds in our servers? The drive for faster AI platforms and high performance computing requires high power computing chips, presents considerable challenges for thermal management. Chips have specific challenges of die hot-spots and dissipating high heat fluxes. Synthetic diamonds have outstanding thermal conductivity at room temperature, providing constant heat spreading capability, unmatched by any other material. It is in fact, diamonds conduct 5 times more heat conducting than copper (the next best material). Diamonds are also electrically insulating, high mechanical strength, very low weight, chemical inertness and low toxicity. Our new GPU servers will embed a layer of synthetic diamond to remove heat from silicon, more importantly remove hot-spots on the GPUs/CPUs quickly adding significantly greater life to the processors. Because liquids are more efficient than air, we use waterless liquid cooling systems running in a closed loop to transfer heat from diamond layer to the facility water at room temperature and adiabatic cooling outside the datacenter. This is currently the world's most energy efficient way to host AI compute. The system eliminates 12 of the 18 very high-speed fans, reducing the power consumption of the servers and also the power required to cool the servers. We are working OEMs such as AMD, to over clock the GPUs and extract more compute per watt.

Today, the Biden-Harris Administration announced that the U.S. Department of Commerce and Akash Systems have signed a non-binding preliminary memorandum of terms (PMT) to provide up to $18.2 million in proposed direct funding under the CHIPS and Science Act. The proposed investment would support the construction of a 40,000 square foot cleanroom space within an existing building to transform it into a facility for semiconductor manufacturing. This proposed CHIPS funding, together with funding from Akash, venture capital firms, and other private investors, would support a $121 million investment and enable the company to leverage its intellectual property and experience of developing semiconductor technologies that serve important end markets, such as communications and the defense industrial base, while also creating over 400 direct manufacturing and construction jobs.
