South Dakota Community Foundation (SDCF) recently awarded a $20,000 South Dakota Fund grant to Lower Brule Community College (LBCC). Funding will assist with funding for the implementation of a Student Information System to improve record keeping and student services. The Lower Brule Sioux Tribe chartered the LBCC in 1993 with the purpose to provide education programs and to establish and operate an educational institution at the post-secondary level on the Lower Brule Sioux Tribe Reservation. With the implementation of a new Student Information System, LBCC provides a one-stop shop for students to apply, register for classes, pay bills, and many other student driven actions. The information system will also provide all members of the LBCC community a consistent, efficient, and reliable system to obtain information. In the second half of 2024, the McGregor Fund approved seven Recovery & Restoration grants, totaling $2 million, for pathways to safety and healing from interpersonal and societal violence, abuse and inequity. These included a grant for $100,000 to Detroit Disability Power, in general operations support as DDP grows its work to advance inclusion, create community, and harness the organizing power of Detroit’s disability community, estimated to be nearly 20% of the city’s population. 📌 Fiscally sponsored by the Michigan Disability Rights Coalition and led by and working for disabled people, DDP aims both to ensure full participation and inclusion as well as empowerment and celebration of disabled persons. 📌 DDP connects people with programs and resources, supports organizations seeking to dismantle ableism in their physical spaces and institutional practices, designs accessible community-building classes and activities, and helps individuals develop speaking and engagement skills for self- and community advocacy. 📌 DDP focuses on multi-marginalized disabled people, many of whom experience multiple barriers to accessing both necessary accommodations and equitable and economically sustainable income opportunities.
