Five Birmingham-area hospitals are rebranding. The hospitals were previously part of Brookwood Baptist Health, which was majority-owned by Tenet Healthcare Corp., which sold its 70% ownership stake in Brookwood Baptist Health to Orlando Health, a South Florida healthcare company. Today, January 9, 2025, has been designated a National Day of Mourning to honor the late President Jimmy Carter, who passed away on December 29, 2024, at the age of 100. President Joe Biden declared this day to coincide with Carter's state funeral at the Washington National Cathedral. Mazda is considering shifting production to its Alabama plant in Huntsville in response to the incoming Trump Administration's proposed tariffs. The auto industry is preparing to see whether the administration will follow through on a proposed 25% tariff on imports from Mexico and Canada. As the company faces nationwide closures, the Big Lots distribution center in Montgomery will lay off nearly 500 workers next week, according to the Alabama Department of Commerce. Jesse Lewis, a World War II veteran who grew up in poverty in segregated Alabama, knew early on that he wanted to make the most of his life despite his sparse surroundings. "I came from Northport, Alabama, I was reared by my grandmother. and we didn't have a nickel or a nail, and I made up my mind that I wanted to make some money," he said. "I didn't want to do anything else but make some money." As Lewis celebrates his 100th birthday, he reflects on his successful career as an Alabama businessman. His business ventures include Jesse J.
