About us
The Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute is a marketing organization with the mission of increasing the economic value of the Alaska seafood resource through: • Increasing the positive awareness of the Alaska Seafood brand; • Collaborative marketing programs that align ASMI and industry marketing efforts for maximum impact within the food industry; • Long-term proactive marketing planning; • Quality assurance, technical industry analysis, education, advocacy and research; • Prudent, efficient fiscal management. ASMI is a public-private partnership between the State of Alaska and the Alaska seafood industry established to foster economic development of a renewable natural resource. We are thrilled about our recent award of $8.5 million dollars to expand international marketing efforts through 2030. ASMI will use the funds to diversify overseas markets for Alaska seafood at a time marked by significant global market collapse that has put financial pressure on Alaska communities, fishermen, fishing families, processors, and seafood businesses. The funds will be used to: * Expand trade and foodservice promotions in Southeast Asia and Latin America and add consumer marketing programs to both regions. * Expand efforts in Brazil to include consumer marketing and help grow this important market by $10-$15 million in exports per year. * Add the Middle East/ North Africa (MENA) region as a program area, allowing for development of numerous promotional efforts like consumer, retail, foodservice and trade marketing. * Execute a feasibility study to examine Alaska Seafood export potential to India. RAPP funding will also allow ASMI to supplement its ongoing efforts in Japan, the UK, and the EU. “The timing of the new federal funds is well-aligned with the Alaska seafood industry’s needs to combat numerous global economic pressures,” said ASMI Executive Director Jeremy Woodrow. “While these funds will help ASMI grow our international efforts, they will also allow ASMI to direct additional State funds toward the U.S. market, where consumer demand for seafood has fallen dramatically and is sorely in need of marketing support. We look forward to this opportunity to help grow the Alaska Seafood brand and increase demand around the world. “The ASMI International staff has done a tremendous job to secure additional federal funds at a time of incredible need for the Alaska seafood industry,” Woodrow said.

"Well, we’ve been through one heck of a rough patch the past two years, and it’s fair to say the storm isn’t quite over," Jeremy Woodrow, ASMI's executive director, told IntraFish when asked for a review of the year and what might come next in 2025. "However, I do believe there is opportunity ahead and ASMI has solid direction as to how and where we will help the Alaska seafood industry find success in 2025." https://lnkd.in/gQTEnUeH

ASMI Board Chair Allen Kimball and ASMI Executive Director Jeremy Woodrow visited Japan to engage with end-users of Alaska Seafood, participate in a consumer event at a local grocery store, conduct trade media interviews and market research, and visit with the U.S. Embassy and Japan Fisheries Agency. On November 12, the ASMI Japan team organized an Alaska Seafood trade seminar and reception, with 126 industry professionals in attendance including major Japanese seafood importers, trading companies, processors, and retailers. Craig Elliott, Agricultural Attache with the Office of Agricultural Affairs, provided remarks to the attendees. Mr. Woodrow provided an Alaska Seafood update including industry challenges and opportunities given global competition and provided trade members with an overview of the brand value of Alaska Seafood and the power of Alaska's sustainability story. Chair Kimball presented to the group about the Responsible Fisheries Management (RFM) program, and the strength of a wild-capture certification program in communicating product origin and responsible sourcing to consumers. The ASMI Japan team has created invaluable opportunities for Chair Kimball and Mr. Woodrow to speak further with consumers, trade, and industry leaders which will strengthen the relationship between ASMI and Japan.
