Last Sunday, I had the immense pleasure of co-presenting our talk "Don't Push The Narrative - Improvise!" at Game Industry Conference alongside Nikolai Valentin Hilz! We outlined how improv techniques can be used create character driven choice design in your game narrative, and demonstrated these techniques with some live improv! We spun the tale of Scot and Gremlough, two characters in a boomer shooter who fell in love while escaping a circus full of two-headed, six-legged clowns! The reception to the talk was amazing! I've never had so many people come up to chat or message me afterwards to ask further questions or share how much they enjoyed it! So now we're already discussing ideas to improve it, as well as other improv-related game development talks! GIC and Poznan were both incredibly welcoming and a great experience, I hope to make it back next year! I'd also like to say some special thanks: - to Senad Hrnjadovic for the pictures, being my sightseeing partner in crime, and general great hangs and chats - Games/Bavaria for sponsoring our trip - to Wojciech Becla for helping us get this talk into the conference (there was some initial scepticism, as it is quite a unique topic) - Richard Schmidbauer for introducing us to the magic of 88 Whisky Bar - And Simo Iliev, Logan Gabriel, Martin Bakardzhiev and André Bernhardt for being part of one of the coolest impromptu conference social groups ever!

Catch Nikolai Valentin Hilz and me at Game Industry Conference and Poznań Game Arena in Poznan from tomorrow! We'll also be giving a talk on choice design and improv techniques in video game narratives called "Don't Push The Narrative - Improvise!" at 1pm on Sunday! Will the talk itself be improvised? Have we actually planned anything? Is this is all a big ruse? Come see the talk and find out! (For legal reasons, I do need to say that we do actually have a plan and structure. We're not psychopaths, lol.) Huge shout out to Games/Bavaria for sponsoring our trip! Nie będziemy robić impro po polsku. Przepraszamy.

If you're around PAX Australia this weekend, make sure to check out one of the 3(!?) projects I'm involved with that are showcasing! Hollow Hero (Toybox Games Studios) - Indie Showcase and People's Choice winners last year, with a fancy new level to show off (and some fancy new vocals in the soundtrack from Mariya Anastasova!) Nullstar: Solus (Smash Attack Studios / Dean Baron) - Development is progressing SO fast! Go play the game, then go follow the Kickstarter! Kingless: Festival of Explosions (Two19) - A board game(!?) and another of last year's Indie Showcase winners (and People's Choice runner-ups!), with a Kickstarter running RIGHT NOW featuring a music track by me with vocals from the incredible Amelia Jones Vocals! I'm sad I won't be there to celebrate with everyone, so please celebrate twice as much on my behalf!!

EcoGnomix has finally released!!! This game has been such an amazing project to be part of! Of course, working with Lars H. Grevsmühl, Marcel Zurawka, Julius Krüger, Vincent Roscher, Lars Eble, Cristina Fabbri Prieto, Bahy Nguyen Kerstin P. from Irox Games UG (haftungsbeschränkt) and Mateusz Sadowski, Robert Woziński, Szymon Westfal and so many others at Untold Tales has been amazingly fun and I couldn’t ask to be part of a better team! But on top of that, I had the freedom to do some absolutely INSANE things for this game! Including (but not limited to): - Completely improvising 7 different scenes for collectible recordings, and improvising many lines in cutscenes and trailers! - Hiring a professional whistler (shout out to Jeff Saxon!) for a few tracks - Hiring Mariya Anastasova, one of the incredible vocalists from Baldur’s Gate 3, to sing on the track for the 2nd boss battle! - Creating an absurd amount of the sound effects with my own voice, including chickens, deer, frogs, scorpions, lizards, gnomes, fairy mushrooms, beavers, chicken-tree hybrids, the beastly toad known as Toadoculus, the colossal sand worm known as Ancient Cactus Eater, various pops and other little sounds (and probably more things I’ve forgotten) - Single-handedly performing all parts in a gnome choir - And last but not least, recording a fight between an old man and a chicken, in which I play both roles I’m so grateful to everyone for giving me the freedom to have so much fun during the development process, and have learnt SO much over the course of working on this game! I’m also sure this game will serve as a great first step towards my goal of bringing more improvisation into the world of video game development! So if you like what you hear, please tell me, ask me questions, get in touch! If you don’t, please don’t hurt my very fragile ego. (I joke, constructive criticism is also very welcome!) I have much of the improv and sound effect creation process filmed, and I hope (dream) that I’ll have the time to post more content about it in the near future. But until then, please enjoy EcoGnomix!

Finally a chance to recap devcom and gamescom! Had such an incredible time celebrating my 30th birthday, giving my 1st (hopefully of many 😉) Devcom talk, seeing FOUR projects I’m working on on display, seeing heaps of old friends, and meeting heaps of new ones! So many people I want to thank! Tom Schipper for an amazing surprise birthday present of STROOPWAFELS! Sophie Kordes for being an insanely good hype-person leading up to my talk Nico Balletta for giving me the opportunity to speak at Devcom! Markus Schoof for treating me to a great Japanese lunch Bas Wilk for braving the public area with me. Tim Sommer for getting me coffee with my name in it. Jonas Braukmann for inviting me to free lunch in the Plaion section. Bernardo Vidal and all the audio folk for endless sick hangs. And of course all the awesome teams I got to share the excitement of exhibiting with! Irox Games UG (haftungsbeschränkt), Jumpy Bit GmbH, Smash Attack (Dean Baron and Ryan Gee) and FIERY THINGS! Also to Untold Tales for creating the first ever figure of a character I voice! And my first in-person team meeting with SenAm Games! Massive congrats to everyone on a successful Devcom and Gamescom! Thank you to everyone who came to my talk, everyone I got to meet, everyone who was just good vibes in general, I'd attempt to list you all but then the post would be 10x as long! Thank y'all for a great birthday and gamescom/devcom! Already booked accomodation for next year! 😆
