Key events our Intelligence Team is monitoring this Thursday morning (1/16): ▪️ The proposed #Gaza ceasefire is facing delays as Israel’s cabinet called for Hamas to withdraw last-minute demands and adhere to prior commitments. The delay comes as up to 70 people were reportedly killed in Israeli airstrikes throughout Gaza on Wednesday night into this morning. Israel's cabinet was set to vote on a proposed ceasefire and hostage release deal with Hamas, which includes a 42-day ceasefire, a swap of hostages and prisoners, and increased humanitarian aid to Gaza. The agreement, which was expected to start Sunday, would mark the first pause in hostilities in over a year and a significant influx of aid for Gaza's people. Mediating nations, including the U.S., Egypt, and Qatar, pledged to oversee the agreement's implementation, while further negotiations aim to address additional hostage releases and long-term peace efforts.     ▪️ #SouthKorea’s impeached president, Yoon Suk Yeol, has refused further questioning after being detained by anti-corruption officials over his controversial martial law declaration. #Yoon exercised his right to remain silent during over 10 hours of questioning, as investigators consider formally arresting him in the coming days. The anti-corruption agency, working with police and military, has 48 hours to seek a court order for his arrest or release him. Yoon’s lawyers argue the detention warrant is invalid and have requested the Seoul Central District Court to review his release.    ▪️ #Cuba began releasing prisoners Wednesday as part of Vatican-mediated talks, following the U.S. announcement of plans to lift Cuba's designation as a state sponsor of terrorism. Among those freed were individuals convicted of crimes related to the historic 2021 protests. The U.S. government stated the prisoner releases are part of an agreement expected to be completed before President Biden’s term ends on January 20. Cuba’s foreign ministry confirmed plans to gradually release 553 convicts while exploring legal and humanitarian pathways for their freedom.    ▪️ Ukrainian air defenses intercepted a Russian drone attack on Thursday, with 34 out of 55 drones shot down and no casualties reported. The strike coincides with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer's first visit to Kyiv since taking office. Starmer announced a 100-year partnership treaty to bolster military cooperation, economic recovery, and cultural ties, underscoring Britain’s commitment to #Ukraine’s long-term resilience. Your morning brief of global events for 1/14 👇🏻 ▪️ The #AutoFire, which ignited Monday evening in the Santa Clara River bottom, is currently being battled by firefighters in Ventura County. Fueled by gusty Santa Ana winds, the fire rapidly grew to 56 acres before forward progress was halted overnight, though containment remains at 0%. Crews continue to extinguish hotspots using ground teams and water-dropping aircraft, while the fire's cause is under investigation. ▪️ Intensifying Santa Ana winds, with gusts up to 75 mph, threaten to worsen the two major wildfires near #LosAngeles, which have claimed 24 lives, destroyed 12,000 structures, and displaced over 90,000 people. Firefighters continue to battle blazes while federal disaster aid and mortgage relief efforts are being mobilized.    ▪️ Hamas has agreed to a draft #ceasefire deal aiming to end the 15-month war in #Gaza and secure the release of dozens of hostages taken in the October 2023 attack. The three-phase agreement includes an initial hostage exchange, a phased Israeli troop withdrawal, and increased humanitarian aid, while subsequent phases hinge on further negotiations. Despite progress, airstrikes continue, with over 46,000 Palestinians killed to date.   ▪️ #SouthKorea's Constitutional Court adjourned the impeachment trial of President Yoon Suk Yeol after he failed to appear, with proceedings set to resume Thursday. #Yoon, who faces allegations of insurrection and a pending arrest warrant, remains at his residence amid heightened political turmoil following his brief declaration of martial law in December. Meanwhile, North Korea launched ballistic missiles during a visit by Japan's foreign minister, adding to regional tensions.    ▪️ #Ukraine's air defense and mobile drone units intercepted 58 out of 80 drones launched by #Russia in overnight attacks across 11 regions, according to the Ukrainian Air Force. Electronic warfare tactics redirected 21 drones, demonstrating Ukraine's advanced countermeasures in the ongoing conflict.    ▪️ Today, Baltic Sea #NATO nations called for enhanced security measures following recent damage to undersea infrastructure, including power cables and pipelines. This comes amid concerns over hybrid threats linked to Russia. Leaders at the Baltic Sea NATO Allies Summit in Helsinki emphasized the challenges of monitoring the heavily trafficked sea and proposed a stronger NATO presence to deter future incidents. This morning, Polish state broadcaster TVP World reported that a ship was circling the Baltic Pipeline, a key gas link between Norway and Poland, raising security concerns.
