  • Celebrating the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. - American Baptist minister, activist and political philosopher. I have an indelible, cherished memory of my childhood: I was just 8 years old when Dr. King was shot and killed and my parents were deeply committed to the Civil Rights movement. My family attended a march in Newark, NJ to honor his life and work shortly after his assassination - I remember my father lifting me up on his shoulders so I could see - to take in the sea of people - thousands of folks of all sizes and colors - weeping together. My young heart felt the depth of despair and sorrow all around me. I remember the feeling of weightedness. I remember thinking what a special and important man he must have been for all those people to be there - weeping - mourning his loss. May his memory forever be a blessing and a guide for the work that needs to be done. #AlexanderTechnique #atphila #Mindfulness #alexandertechniqueonline #MLKMemories #CivilRightsLegacy #MLKDay #ChildhoodMemories #LegacyOfJustice

  • Here’s the last tip in my series on carrying things! Be sure to scroll back and see Parts 1 & 2 where we discuss the no-duck 🦆 rule and how to widen our shoulders and free our heads upwards as we lift a bag to carry… Today we add in the "secret sauce" of draping elbows 💪🏾💪🏾 This one gem 💎of an idea has helped SO MANY of my students with SO MANY different activities! Take a moment to pick up something - perhaps your groceries - and notice which direction your elbows are inclined towards — are they trying to cozy upwards towards your ears?? Now gently think of releasing your elbows towards the floor - I like to image heavy velvet drapes with those little curtain weights at the bottom… Bonus tip: I find it particularly helpful to think of the release coming from the back/underneath (tricep) side as opposed to the front/top (bicep) side of my arm. This tip can make a HUGE difference in how it feels to carry things - especially heavy ones! It also can help you be more comfortable driving a car, pushing a shopping cart or Rollator/walker 👍 What direction were your elbows inclined? Did anything change when you invited your elbows to drape? Alexander Technique has been around for over 120 years yet hardly anyone has heard of it and we often hear either what it isn’t (it isn’t physical therapy or exercise for instance) or a lot of jargony, mysterious language like “the use of the self”. This workshop is an introduction to Alexander’s discoveries for Summit attendees that are new or newer to the Technique. Our goal is to provide a brief history and simple framework to help understand the Technique, experience the foundational principles of the work, plus define commonly used AT terms to help newcomers to get the most out of the week’s offerings. • Did you know I have an “official” company policy?? I always tell new students - Please don’t believe me!! What I’m after is people 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 - and that happens through 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 - not belief! In fact, I know that if they do blindly believe what I'm offering it can often derail and delay their own discoveries 😩 🤦🏻♀️ Of course our habits around learning are just as strong as our habits of walking, sitting, etc - That’s why AT is about pycho-physical re-learning - it addresses our habits of thinking and moving so we can get rid of unhelpful habits and redirect into efficient balance. What beliefs have you debunked in your lifetime? I did a whole TED talk about beliefs we have about posture that are not only NOT helpful, but keep us locked in a detrimental loop of "trying hard” - watch it here: https://lnkd.in/eijcp77y Click the link in bio above 👆 to learn how to join the AT Phila learning community with classes, lessons, courses and more.

  • Does your neck ache when you wear a backpack? If the answer is yes - this post is for you! In the last reel we explored the NO-DUCK 🦆 rule when putting on a shoulder bag - (be sure to scroll back and review since we are adding to that idea with this post) With AT we learn to pay attention to what F.M. Alexander called the “means-whereby” - prioritizing how we do something over what we are doing - it turns out that if you squeeze yourself as you put your backpack on it will cause a cascade of ill effects that are most likely causing that pain in your neck and/or shoulders and back! By enacting a constructive coordination plan for how we put on our backack we can eliminate most if not all of that unnecessary tension - woohoo! 🤸🏿♀️🤸🏿♀️ Notice that during the video I pause several times to check in with myself to repeatedly un-squeeze at key moments where the urge to duck and squeeze are the greatest: 1. before I begin as I lift the backpack to my shoulder 2. as I lift the backpack to my shoulder 3. as I reach for the other strap 4. as I pulll the 2nd strap up on my shoulder How’d you do? Share below 👇🏽and let us know how carrying a backpack changed for you when you implemented your constructive coordination plan 🙌🏼 Click the link in bio above 👆to learn how to join the AT Phila learning community with classes, lessons, courses and more. #AlexanderTechnique #AtPhila #Mindfulness #AlexanderTechniqueOnline #NeckPainRelief #PostureMatters #MoveWithEase #NoDuckRule #BackpackComfort #MindfulMovement

  • I feel that exploring Alexander Technique truly helps me live up to this potential - I am ever grateful for this tool kit that enlivens my sense of curiosity and deepens my delight with each new discovery. Actors train specifically to deliver memorized text as if they were saying it for the very first time…. ovr and over and over again…. • This video caught my eye 👀 So simple really… Seemingly obvious in hindsight… 🤦🏻♀️ Which is why it’s so funny! 🤣 It reminds me of a scenario I often to describe to my students: Imagine you are in a hallway with many doors and encounter someone struggling mightily to open a locked door - huffing, puffing, kicking and fussing… and the watch as someone passes that person to seemingly without effort open the door next to that frustrated person to enter the same room with ease… This captures the essence of AT for me - the changes we make can make us feel effortless when we stop wasting effort by reducing resistance and optimizing efficiency. Here’s to working smarter, nit harder in the coming year 😉 Click the link in bio above 👆to learn how to join the AT Phila learning community with classes, lessons, courses and more. #AlexanderTechnique #AtPhila #Mindfulness #AlexanderTechniqueOnline #WorkSmarterNotHarder #EffortlessLiving #OptimizeEfficiency #MindfulMovement #AlexanderTechnique #EaseAndEfficiency #ReduceResistance

  • As the flurry of holiday festivities calms down, it’s the perfect time to direct our attention to self-care. You may have just spent A LOT of time choosing, making and or buying gifts for the special people in your life… Now is the perfect time to consider and choose gifts for YOU! 🎁🎁 The gift of ease -Let’s be honest - most of us are WAY too hard on ourselves! The notion of "working hard "has been so deeply embedded into our belief system that simply asking "how much is enough?” can be a radical act in itself! When we use more effort that is needed it is throwing us off our mark and can cause strain and pain. Efficiency is a beautiful thing 🙌🏼 The gift of time - Do you always feel like you are running out of time? 🕰️ The funny paradox is that when we slow down - we actually can expand our sense of time… give it a try! When we slow down, one of the key things is that we gain perspective and can make better choices about our priorities - Feeling stuck in a rush keeps us in a hampster-wheel-like-world where everything is equally important and urgent. Take a moment to breathe, notice what is around you and supporting you. You have time…. The gift of space - Too often we crowd ourselves - mentally, physically, socially We squeeze ourselves - perhaps fearful of standing out? We stifle ourselves with limiting thoughts - perhaps learned behavior and/or societal pressures? When we allow ourselves to open fully in all our dimensions - length, width, depth - When we open our minds with curiosity as the leader instead of judgement The world opens in possibility! 🌍 What gifts will you give yourself this year? 🎁🎁 Click the link in bio above 👆to learn how to join the AT Phila learning community with classes, lessons, courses and more. #AlexanderTechnique #AtPhila #Mindfulness #AlexanderTechniqueOnline #HolidayReset #SelfCareSeason #GiftsForYou #EaseAndEfficiency #RadicalSelfCare #TheGiftOfTime #SlowDownToSpeedUp #BreatheAndBe
