Do you spend a lot of time looking at screens? Did you know that eye strain can contribute to both getting headaches and deteriorating vision? Today’s tip builds on the last reel on the importance of resting your eyes. Scroll back ⬅️ to see how we used movement and changing our focal distance to refresh and rest our eyes. Now we are going to add Palming as a way to fully rest your eyes. I learned this Technique many years ago and it is surprisingly refreshing! Find a place to sit comfortably - you may find it more comfortable to rest your elbows on a table. Gently cup your hands and place one palm inside the other. Now gently place your hands over your open eyes and navigate your hands positioning so you create a seal that blocks out ALL the light. Rest here for 5 - 15 minutes. When you are ready, gently close your eyes first before you remove your hands. Give your closed eyes a few moments to adjust to the light before gently opening them. How’d you do? Amen! I think of curiosity this way as well - kissing cousins perhaps 😘 I surprised myself by walking away from my career as a choreographer and performer - I never imagined I would, yet that transition unfolded for a myriad of reasons more than. a decade ago now…. What is most surprising is that I don’t really miss it 🤣 Teaching has become my daily creative practice and the hours I used to devote in rehearsal studios exploring new movement has been redirected to exploring with all of my students in my AT studios at Curtis, University of Delaware, CHOP, Crosslands retirement community, online, and in my home and Center City studios. My students feed my curiosity and help me sustain a rich and deeply satisfying creative practice. I began my AT training 40 years ago as of next month - and it’s honestly getting better each day. This painting by Willam Nelson Copley made me stop in my tracks at a recent visit to the Philadelphia Museum of Art. It vividly sums up this precarious moment in our country for me. Thinking is the primary tool we use in enacting Alexander’s discoveries - We sometimes name the process “Constructive Thinking” or ‘Directing” - describing our ability to choose both where we put our attention and how we can proactively aim ourselves into balance. But thinking can get a bad wrap - for some it intimates “over-thinking” or a tendency to steer away from embodiment in a culture that has a strong bias towards intellect. To me thinking includes the very dynamic system of taking information in through all of our senses and the ability to shift attention and intention into action. What does "thinking" mean to you? Do your neck, shoulders or back hurt when you work at the computer? Try this short movement break with me to refresh yourself both physically and mentally! Begin by backing away from your computer. Allow your eyes to begin to scan and see the spaces around you - above you, behind and to the sides of you. As your eyes move, allow your head to follow and then place a hand gently on your heart and allow your heart to follow where your eyes and head are moving. Allow your eyes and head to lead your whole body all the way down to your seat resting on the chair. If you have a window nearby - allow your eyes to rest by looking out your window at least 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. The American Optometric Association recommends the “rule of 20”: - take a 20 second break - every 20 minutes - looking at something 20 feet away.
