Our organization will always uplift the power and voices of our undocumented immigrant community. In October of 2024, the American Immigrant Council reviewed and published the devastating cost of mass deportation. Using information from the Department of Homeland Security and other databases, the AIC estimates a cost of $88 billion every year reaching $967.9 billion after a decade. Although these are conservative estimates, the execution of mass deportation will likely result in devastating economic burdens. This week's Grassroots Shoutout is the Haywood Burns Institute named after W. Haywood Burns, an American lawyer, author, activist, and professor. They work to establish a community-centered approach to transform systems, including the justice sector. The Burns Institute engages in collaboration, advocacy, and innovation in order to eliminate racial and ethnic disparities. We are so excited to announce a new series on our social media platforms that centers and uplifts the work done by organizations across the country: Grassroots Shoutout of the Week. This week we chose Mend Collaborative. They are doing amazing work with survivors of harm through their Victim Offender Dialogues (VODs), Survivor Support, and Surrogate Restorative Dialogues. Partnering with and centering the experiences and skills of system-impacted individuals, this organization has successfully implemented services aimed at healing and restoration.
