About us
The Alice Paul Institute is a not-for-profit 501(c)3 corporation based in Mount Laurel, New Jersey at Alice Paul’s birthplace, Paulsdale. API was founded in 1984 as the Alice Paul Centennial Foundation to commemorate the centennial of Alice Paul’s 1885 birth. It was an all-volunteer effort until 2000. Today, seven paid staff, dozens of volunteers, and a board of directors oversee the Institute’s activities. API furthers the legacy of Alice Paul and her life’s work for gender equality, and also takes a leadership role in bringing recognition to organizations and historic sites that honor women. Headquartered at Paulsdale, a National Historic Landmark, the building is a model of adaptive reuse of a historic site that now hosts a vibrant menu of leadership development programs that use the rich history and potential of women leaders to inspire young people to make a difference in their schools and communities.

One of President Joe Biden’s final acts while in office was to award the nation’s highest civilian honor to a list of living and deceased public figures, including some who fought for a more representative democracy, blazed trails for women in their respective fields and promoted LGBTQ+ rights. On Saturday, Biden awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously to Fannie Lou Hamer, a civil rights activist who fought for equal representation for Black citizens and women from her home state of Mississippi and whose work laid the groundwork for the 1965 Voting Rights Act. Hamer died in 1977; a relative accepted the medal on her behalf. The other recipients included: 🟣 Hillary Clinton, the first American woman nominated for president by a major party; 🟣 Tim Gill, a tech entrepreneur who fought for marriage equality and anti-discrimination protections for LGBTQ+ Americans; 🟣 Jane Goodall, a prominent conservationist who became a household name for her research into primates and human evolution; 🟣 Anna Wintour, the long-time editor of Vogue and cultural icon. ✍️: Mel Leonor Barclay, politics reporter 📸: William J. President Biden Should Finalize the Equal Rights Amendment Check out this article written by board member Kate Kelly! The ERA will help restore abortion access, protect women from violence, and help build a gender-equitable future. Biden should certify it while he still has the power to do so... https://lnkd.in/g4ST7Ayj
