Let’s Talk About Meth Some methamphetamine labs can explode or catch fire, serving as alarming reminders of the dangers that exist in our communities. Yet, many of these operations remain hidden from law enforcement, with only a small fraction being discovered. Understanding what happens to these undetected labs and taking action to identify contamination is crucial for ensuring that these spaces can once again be made safe for re-occupancy. Recognition of danger is the first step toward positive change. Here are some key signs to look out for before entering a suspected structure: 1. Police activity in the area 2. Strong, unusual odors 3. Neglected or unkempt property 4. Empty chemical containers There can be serious health problems in people or animals exposed to meth labs. Potentially deadly chemicals (either meth or by-products of cooking) can enter the body by inhalation, ingestion, or absorption through the skin. Clandestine Meth labs may leave contamination on hard surfaces like walls, countertops, sinks, heating, and air ducting, and may also be absorbed by soft goods items like furniture, drapes, and carpet. Meth use and the production of meth even in small amounts can cause serious health problems not only in the users but also in others who are unintentionally or unknowingly exposed.
