All Tech Is Human
Think Tanks
Together, we work to solve tech and society’s thorniest issues.
About us
All Tech Is Human is building a better approach for tackling thorny tech & society issues that surface values, tensions, trade-offs, and best practices. Our non-profit organization does this through collective understanding, involvement, and action around our three key workstreams of community-building, education, and careers. We have created a unique agnostic network that unites stakeholders across civil society, government, industry, and academia. This directly leads to a more cohesive Responsible Tech ecosystem promoting knowledge-sharing and collaboration, illuminates pathways for a diverse range of backgrounds to participate, and is agile enough to move at the speed of tech. Our secret sauce is our ability to involve not only subject matter experts and influential change agents, but also a broad mixture of individuals typically left out of the process. This provides the ability to fully understand the impact of technology, diagnose its causes and potential pathways for improvement, and affect various levers of change related to policy, education, and workforce makeup of the nascent Responsible Tech ecosystem. Popular programs for All Tech Is Human include our Slack community of over 10k members across 100 countries, regular in-person gatherings (NYC, DC, SF, London), a large mentorship program, regular livestream series, and a popular Responsible Tech Job Board with a related talent pool of thousands, and our influential Responsible Tech Guide. Key areas of focus include Responsible AI, Trust & Safety, and Public Interest Technology. Together, we tackle the world’s thorniest tech & society issues and co-create a tech future aligned with the public interest. We need to make more progress around child safety, but it often runs headfirst into privacy concerns. In our new paper, Balancing Privacy and Child Safety in Encrypted Environments, we recommend ways to get through the current impasse: •Promote user-driven reporting tools and prevention efforts •Leverage human rights law as a framework for resolution •Shift perspective and initial steps •Leverage lived experiences and including diverse voices •Address upstream choices and human vulnerabilities •Create a new framework for dialogue and exchange Ultimately, we believe that the policy stalemate between privacy and safety is resolvable, but it requires a human rights-based approach, changing perspectives, and a willingness to engage in complex, nuanced conversations.
