  • Allsup honors former President Jimmy Carter as a leader in disability policy and advocacy. Carter made numerous efforts to elevate people with disabilities during and after his time in office, furthering the cause of disability civil rights. One of Carter's most significant contributions was the signing of Section 504 (in 1977) of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. This landmark act prohibited discrimination against people with disabilities by any entity receiving federal funding. In 1978, Carter signed Public Law 95-602, which established the National Council on the Handicapped, which later was renamed the National Council on Disability. That agency went on to play a central role in creating the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA), arguably the most significant law in U.S. history for disability civil rights protection. Carter also signed the Mental Health Systems Act of 1980, which funded mental health care at the community level. Carter’s support and enacting of these and other policies were examples of his belief in the strength of humanity and that of the United States, and they were instrumental in elevating America’s public consciousness regarding people with disabilities. “America did not invent human rights. In a very real sense, it’s the other way around. Human rights invented America,” said President Jimmy Carter in his Farewell Address, Jan. 14, 1981.

  • We had the joy and privilege to come back again (our fourth year!) to participate in this year’s Trees For Vets program with The Kaufman Fund. Since it’s inception in 2014, this initiative has been giving Christmas trees to veterans and their families each year. So far, over 2,500 trees have been given, and this time around we gave 300 in the St. Louis area. We love sponsoring and participating in this great event. The Kaufman Fund’s dedication to our veterans is an inspiration. We sincerely thank them for the chance to give back.
