What do career planning and an experiment have in common? Careful planning minimizes the risk of things going wrong. Just like an experiment needs careful planning, so does your career. Can things go wrong? Of course—always, despite the planning. But careful planning reduces the likelihood of failure. A fulfilling career after your PhD doesn’t just happen in most cases. You build it! I’ve always loved inspiring others, so I consciously built that into my role at Alma.Me. I just arrived in Oslo to speak at a PhD conference tomorrow, and I couldn’t be more excited. There are so many days I wake up and ask myself, did you really build this? It’s crazy what happens when you trust yourself and believe you can do it. It feels risky, it feels unsafe—but it is so rewarding. I encourage you all to dare to dream big and take action in that direction. Happy Sunday 💛 #phd #academia

Non-Academic Careers for PhDs | COO @Alma.Me | Building High Performing Teams is My Jam

PhDs - I had a conversation with a friend of mine in HR who oversees hiring for onsite positions at an engineering firm. Here's a couple things she wanted applicants to know: 👉 She's open to hiring candidates willing to relocate BUT: She needs to know that you really WANT to move to that area. She doesn't want to hire you, have you relocate, be unhappy and quit - hiring and training is expensive. So, if you include in your cover letter what piques your interest in living in that area, it makes it easier for her to consider you for the position. What are some (non-job related) reasons you'd be open to relocating? 🔁 Pass it along - repost to help a friend. ________________________ Are you a PhD struggling to get hired in industry? PhDs - Tailoring your resume isn't what you think. If you're spending hours tailoring your resume for every position, you're doing it wrong We ask for tailored resumes because it makes it easy to understand how your skills translate to the position. Otherwise, you leave it open to our assumptions and inferences. Not good when we spend 60 seconds or less reviewing each resume. Instead, if you spend a little time researching the type of role you're applying for, you'll generally find common themes across that type of role. Create your resume based on the themes across these roles. Then, the edits you have to make for each application should be fairly small (e.g., tweaking some wording here or there). This should make your applications easier and free up your time to spend on other important aspects of your search, like networking. 🔄Pass it along - repost to help a friend :) ___________________ Are you a PhD struggling to get job interviews? • I didn’t know where to go or what to do next after my PhD. But I knew I wanted a fulfilling career beyond academia. Like many, I had no idea where to start. So, I joined an organization here at @Karolinska Institutet that organized sessions highlighting the career paths taken by PhD alumni. As an organizer, I attended every session. By helping others, I ended up helping myself. Listening to so many career journeys such as management consulting, field application specialist, research equity analyst and many more, I thought: I like that part of the job; I don’t like that part of the job. This was my path to clarity: being exposed to what’s possible and asking myself, Would I want that in my daily life? Eventually, I realized what I truly love: making an impact, solving problems, coming up with creative solutions, and having the freedom to operate. That’s how @alma.me was born, and I couldn’t be happier! I encourage you to talk to people (leverage informational interview my favourite tool) and learn as much as you can to find your ideal path. It takes time and effort, but I promise you—it’s worth it! PhDs - Networking is overrated... ...if you treat it as transactional. Networking is about building professional friendships. It's not about getting a referral to a job. But it is a critical part of your job search. Networking can get you access to potential employers, recruiters, and hiring managers. And it's the only sure-fire way to beat the ATS. But Networking is only powerful if you make building relationships the first priority. People will be happy to help you in your job search if you first show a genuine interest in getting to know them as a person. 🔄Pass it along - repost to help a friend :) ________________________ Are you a PhD struggling to get a non-academic job? What a PhD can bring to your company Many companies have these preconceived ideas that PhDs are too academic, too expensive, or too specialized. In most cases, that is simply not true. But here is what a PhD can actually bring to your organization. If you give a PhD a chance, this is what you might get: -A highly independent person who can drive things forward: PhDs are used to managing complex projects with minimal supervision. They can take ownership of tasks and see them through to completion. -Critical thinkers and optimizers: PhDs are trained to analyze problems deeply, identify inefficiencies, and develop innovative solutions that save time, money, or resources. -Problem solvers who thrive in uncertainty: During their research, PhDs often work on problems where the answers aren’t obvious, navigating ambiguity with creativity and persistence. -Experts in learning and adaptability: PhDs learn how to learn, quickly absorbing new information, skills, or tools to tackle challenges in unfamiliar domains. -Strong communicators: Writing dissertations, publishing papers, and presenting research gives PhDs a unique ability to communicate complex ideas in a clear and impactful way. -Resilience and grit: Research is filled with failures and setbacks. PhDs are masters of perseverance, knowing how to stay motivated and move forward despite obstacles. -Data-driven decision-makers: Many PhDs have hands-on experience with data analysis, statistics, and research methodologies, making them invaluable in evidence-based decision-making. -A fresh perspective and innovative mindset: Coming from academia, PhDs often bring unique perspectives and approaches that can challenge the status quo and lead to breakthroughs. So, the next time you see a PhD applicant, don’t hesitate to bring them onboard. You might just be hiring your company’s next big asset 🙌 😉 ------------------------------------------ Are you a PhD or PostDoc who has decided to pursue a career outside of academia? PhDs - Academia isn't for everyone. And that's okay. It doesn't make them a bad person for leaving. Just like it doesn't make academia a bad place because they left. Finding the right career is like finding the right relationship. It has to be a fit on both sides. That's where the magic happens. I've advised on organizational performance for over 20 years and the single biggest predictor of high performance is fit. So, do what's right for you. If that means leaving academia, go for it. If that means staying in academia, do your thing. Both paths are valid and meaningful. 🔄Pass it along - repost to help a friend :) ___________________________ Are you a PhD who wants to make the leap into a non-academic job? PhDs - You don't have to prove yourself in one question. This is a common mistake that many PhDs make when interviewing. The interviewer asks them a question and they try to tell everything about themselves and their career history in one go. The problem is that, by doing this, you lose the interviewer's attention with a monologue. Interviews are a dialogue. The best interviews are a conversation. When you engage your audience, you're far more likely to get to the next stage than overwhelming them with detail straight out of the gate. So, as hiring picks up in the new year, remember to relax in those interviews. You're talking to a potential future colleague and friend. Your answers don't have to be perfect - they just have to spark interest. 🔄Pass it along - repost to help a friend :) _______________________ Are you a PhD struggling to land a non-academic job? PhDs: You're an imposter. So is everyone else. Don't let that internal voice convince you you're not good enough. I've advised and mentored people from entry-level employees to C-suite executives. The one thing they all had in common? Self-doubt. No matter how confident they seemed on the surface, everyone I've ever worked with has had some degree of imposter syndrome. So, if you're worried about applying for that job? Go for it. Apply - even if you don't meet 100% of the qualifications. There's no such thing as a perfect candidate. The job description is just a wish list and we don't expect you to meet every condition. The best candidates don't because it gives them room to grow. 🔄 Pass it along - repost to help a friend :) _______________ Are you a PhD struggling to land an industry job?
