About us
Amaterra (meaning a love of the earth) began as a concept rooted in a deep appreciation of family, friendship, the natural splendor of the Pacific Northwest, and labors of love. Located just three miles from downtown Portland, Amaterra will be a world-class venue for wine, cuisine, special events, and entertainment that epitomizes the rural + urban = rurban setting. Our plans include a premium winery membership experience that members can enjoy just minutes from home or work. The vision and planning of Amaterra have taken years to achieve. By meeting the demands and desires of Portland wine consumers, Amaterra Winery will provide a luxurious experience just a quick Uber or Lyft ride within the city limits, with a view that overlooks the vineyard and stretches to the Coast Range. Time and friction are no longer a barrier when you want to experience the best in Oregon wine. We craft premium wines in small lots with a handcrafted approach focused on showcasing the terroir of both estate and sourced vineyard locations. These wines are made in a state-of-the- art, gravity-flow facility with a southwesterly view of the world-famous Willamette Valley wine region. Under the Amaterra label are Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and traditional-method sparkling wines. Amaterra is a state-of-the-art gravity-flow winery. In use is a unique winemaking process that utilizes bridge cranes to allow one elevation drop to act as a multiple-level winemaking facility. This equipment enables the most gentle handling of fruit and the resulting in-process wine, to maintain the desired structure and delicate aromatics. Once fully opened, we will be pleased to offer memberships to our premier wine club for purchase. Members will receive exclusive perks and experiences, including early product releases, members-only tastings and events, preferential seating in our venues, special wines, and more. Please reach out to us if you would like to be contacted when membership types become available.

Amaterra’s 2021 Willamette Valley Pinot Noir received a coveted 93-point score from Wine Spectator reviewer Tim Fish. He wrote that this Pinot Noir is “seductively textured and rich, with supple raspberry and cherry flavors accented by toasty cinnamon, orange peel, and spiced tea as this glides on the polished finish. Drink now through 2031.” Wine Spectator also included this wine in their article 8 Fantastic Oregon Pinot Noirs Up to 93 Points stating, “In this lineup, the top-scoring wine comes from Amaterra Winery, which is located in a distinctive area, Portland’s West Hills, on the northern edge of Willamette Valley. Co-founders Werner and Colleen Nistler planted a 12-acre vineyard there in 2013; today, they also buy grapes from many growers in the area.” Crafted to exemplify a classic Oregon Pinot Noir, this cuvee is a combination of both estate-grown fruit and thoughtfully selected vineyard blocks from partner vineyards. An intentional range of soils, aspects, and clones of Pinot Noir contribute to a balance that only an artful combination of sites can create. Multiple nestled AVAs from the Willamette Valley were used when creating this wine; 25% Ribbon Ridge AVA, 22% Yamhill-Carlton AVA, 15% Chehalem Mountains AVA, 14% Van Duzer AVA, 10% Willamette Valley AVA, and 7% Tualatin Valley. After the fruit arrived and was thoroughly sorted, keeping 11% of the grapes whole cluster, each vineyard site was fermented and barrel-aged in French oak barrels individually before being blended through various trials with the production team. @wine_spectator @timfish_wine #tualatinava #vanduzerava @ava_vanduzer #willamettevalley #winescore #93winescore

Meet the Vine, Meet the Wine! Discover the Amaterra 2021 Pinot Noir, Hirschy Vineyard, Yamhill-Carlton AVA, Willamette Valley, Oregon. Hirschy Vineyard is located in the heart of the Yamhill-Carlton AVA. At 400 feet elevation, the vines surround an iconic barn visible from miles away. The blocks that Amaterra works with are due south exposure and, combined with the Willakenzie soils, lead to dark-fruited and well-structured wines. Planted in 2007, this wine possesses aromas of perfume, bright cherry, Willamette raspberries, and creme brulee. Flavors are round and concentrated, intensely red-fruited flavors with cherry lozenge and oak spice. Visit Amaterra Winery today to taste!

Amaterra’s General Manager and Winemaker, Matt Vuylsteke, was a featured tennis player in Oregon Wine Press’ cover story for their July Magazine. Spurred by meeting James Suckling, author Sarah Murdoch discovered tennis as a shared common interest alongside wine and began to notice many parallels between the two. Searching through her connections in the wine industry, she found and interviewed winemakers throughout the valley who shared that same love for tennis. We encourage you to take a peek at the significant growth on your next visit!
