Results from the AP VoteCast survey showed most Americans, 55%, are in favor of continuing aid to Ukraine in the fight. Within the American Communities Project’s 15 types, the views are more mixed — some in favor, some opposed — but there is still strong support for aiding Ukraine. In 11 of the 15 types, more people favor continuing aid than ending it, and that includes some places that went for Trump, even by large margins. https://lnkd.in/eGKMCCTG

The American Communities Project studies local level cultural, socioeconomic and political changes across America.
About us
A combined social science/journalism effort based at The George Washington University’s School of Media & Public Affairs, the ACP uses a vast array of data – from election results and economic numbers to consumer surveys and polling – to break communities into different types for analysis. The primary point: Even in the age of the Web, people in different places experience the world very differently. Working with academics, the ACP used a wide range of different factors – everything from income to race and ethnicity to education to religious affiliation – and a clustering technique to identify 15 types of counties, everything from Big Cities to Aging Farmlands. It has mapped those types to show where the country’s political, socio-economic and cultural fissures are. The result is an unprecedented growing attempt to understand the subtleties and complexities of the United States as the country reimagines its future and its place in the world. The Project correlates economic and demographic data to election results and consumer data to see what is moving those different communities and to see who is struggling and who is thriving in the 21st Century United States.

As part of AP VoteCast’s survey during the 2024 election, 32,000-plus registered voters across the country answered a question about the seriousness of racism in the U.S. today. Notably, a majority in each of the American Communities Project’s 15 types said that racism is a “very serious” or “somewhat serious” problem in the country. https://lnkd.in/ewPJsdsf

Go through Tuesday's exit polls and you'll find "crime" did not score high on the list of voter concerns. It's been coming down. But it's impacts look very different across the American Communities Project's 15 types. https://lnkd.in/e2E4RkD6

Something to watch for as the ballots are counted tonight and the days that follow... If turnout is up in East Lansing, Michigan, compared to 2016, that would suggest a win for Vice President Kamala Harris’s goal of reaching and turning out the college vote. If it’s flat, or down, that’s likely a good sign for former President Donald Trump. https://lnkd.in/epvmGPiz

As Election Day nears, I want to resurface the work the American Communities Project did in four very different communities asking people about the words and phrases that define and divide the people of the United States. https://lnkd.in/g8Z5XF5D
