About us
Who we are: The American Enterprise Institute is a public policy think tank dedicated to defending human dignity, expanding human potential, and building a freer and safer world. The work of our scholars and staff advances ideas rooted in our belief in democracy, free enterprise, American strength and global leadership, solidarity with those at the periphery of our society, and a pluralistic, entrepreneurial culture. How we do it: We are committed to making the intellectual, moral, and practical case for expanding freedom, increasing individual opportunity, and strengthening the free enterprise system in America and around the world. Our work explores ideas that further these goals, and AEI scholars take part in this pursuit with academic freedom. AEI operates independently of any political party and has no institutional positions. Our scholars’ conclusions are fueled by rigorous, data-driven research and broad-ranging evidence. Our work: Our scholars not only engage in research that focuses on today’s most critical challenges but also look ahead to ideas and issues that have yet to be widely recognized. AEI scholars pursue innovative, independent work across a wide array of subjects. From economics, education, health care, and poverty to foreign and defense studies, public opinion, politics, society, and culture, our experts drive the competition of ideas.

This report evaluates recent advances in AI technology and their implications for economic productivity, the workforce, and education in the United States. It notes that AI is a tool with the potential to enhance human labor and create new forms of valuable work—but this is not an inevitable outcome. AEI’s Michael Strain was a member of the National Academy of Sciences Committee on Automation and the U.S. Workforce that wrote this report.

"Schools seeking to equip their students for the rigors of leadership and public affairs need to help them grapple with competing views on the role of government, desirable public policy, and the role of the U.S. in the world. That’s why it is so problematic that, of the 58 faculty members with identifiable political affiliations at Princeton’s School of Public and International Affairs, there are eight left-leaning faculty members for every one right-leaning member." — Frederick Hess and Riley Fletcher at Manhattan Institute

Opposition from Republican senators played a key role in ending Matt Gaetz’s nomination for attorney general, but now scrutiny turns toward other controversial senior picks, such as Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Tulsi Gabbard, and Pete Hegseth. Derek Scissors explains why conservatives must continue to defend the Senate’s essential role in assessing the qualifications and character of presidential nominees, even as the president-elect chafes against this constitutional guardrail.

I very much enjoyed appearing on Nikki Haley's excellent podcast, "Nikki Haley Live." Governor Haley encouraged listeners not to obsess about the personalities in the news these days, but instead to focus on the policies of the new Trump administration: "Because the policies are going to affect your family, your grocery bill, and you at the end of the day." She's right. We had a great conversation about fiscal policy. And I learned more about foreign policy by listening to the full show. Conservatives know the greatness of America is the enduring wisdom of our principles and institutions. Sidestepping them seems like a quick fix, but liberals can sidestep just as well as conservatives. And too many sidesteps will leave us far from where we want to be, writes Derek Scissors.

Donald Trump’s stunning and decisive return to power makes it official: We live in the Age of Trump. The 2008 global financial crisis was a turning point in history, and it is now clear that Trump is the dominant political figure of the post-crisis period. But the strength and endurance of Trump’s legacy will depend on whether his policies advance long-term prosperity. As the saying goes, nothing succeeds like success. Does President Trump want to be remembered as a great champion of prosperity? Or as a president who blew out the deficit, chilled private-sector investment, and harmed businesses? After his astonishing political comeback, we will soon find out. My latest Project Syndicate column: https://lnkd.in/eT5hDx5f
