American Express, in collaboration with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, launched the Small Business Hurricane Recovery grant program to support small businesses like Hendersonville Toy Company, a family-owned toy, book and game store, rebuild and recover. As a grant recipient, they hope to use the funding to maintain their business through an uncertain holiday revenue season in the wake of Hurricane Helene and pay it forward by supporting local toy drives for families who have also experienced losses. We recently celebrated non-profit leaders who attended the American Express Leadership Academy in New York. For the first time in the program's 17-year history, we awarded three alumni $25,000 each to help them develop programs at their nonprofit organizations inspired by their experience at the Leadership Academy. American Express alumni award winner LaToria Thomas, President & CEO of United Way of Northwest Louisiana, said the Leadership Academy gave her an “overwhelming sense of confidence” that her nonprofit could achieve its goal of improving literacy rates of kindergarteners in their region. “We changed the way we tell our story to humanize what we do,” she said. Happy #TeamAmex Tuesday! November is #NationalFamilyCaregiversMonth, and today, Ethan from North Carolina shares how our eldercare benefits supported him through a family emergency: I’m Ethan, an Information Security Manager, and I’ve been with Amex since 2017. Recently, my mom suffered a fall and was unexpectedly admitted to the ICU. My sister was about to travel overseas, which left me alone to support my mom. Thankfully, I had my Amex benefits to fall back on. First, I spoke with a Healthy Minds counselor who helped me process everything I was feeling and think through my next steps. My counselor also connected me to the Amex back-up eldercare benefit, which gave me access to 24/7 support and caregiving options for my mom. Knowing I had this extra layer of support brought a sense of calm to my family and me during an incredibly challenging time and gave me the peace of mind to focus on her recovery while also balancing my responsibilities at work. I’m so grateful and blessed to be part of a company that truly cares about colleagues and their loved ones. Thank you, Amex! October was breast cancer awareness month, but on #TeamAmex, we are continuing to prioritize this topic year-round. This week, our Healthy Living team hosted a powerful fireside chat with our very own Chief Marketing Officer and two-time breast cancer survivor, Elizabeth Rutledge, and Breast Cancer Oncologist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Dr. Sherry Shen. The conversation was moderated by Amex Vice President of Global Well-being & Benefits, Tammy Yee, who is also a two-time breast cancer survivor. With their combined experience and knowledge, these three women discussed risk factors, shared personal stories about how they navigated their diagnoses, the realities of treatment, and so much more. When asked about the hardest part of her journey, Elizabeth said “…it was knowing when and how to ask for help. Those are not easy discussions – especially as a mom, and a leader. But I feel very fortunate to have had an incredible community of people – my family, my friends, and my colleagues – to support me through it all.” Advocating for your own needs while navigating a cancer diagnosis is incredibly challenging, which is why we are proud to back #TeamAmex with resources like free screenings, access to oncology experts, free mental health counseling, and of course, powerful conversations like this one. A very special thank you to Dr. Shen for sharing her expertise and insight, and to Elizabeth and Tammy for having the courage and authenticity to share their stories. #TeamAmex #BreastCancerAwareness *Resources vary by location. As the American Express Leadership Academy in partnership with Common Purpose comes to a close, we’re in awe of the level of talent and passion we saw from the Americas cohort of non-profit leaders last week. After four days of programming, workshops, and sessions with industry experts, Guillermo Bernal from Fundación Placemaking Mexico shared his biggest takeaway from the Academy. “It’s been valuable to learn from others with similar challenges but in different contexts and places. In the end there’s a huge common ground here, which is leading with love and a passion for helping others.”

Our Chief Corporate Affairs Officer Jennifer Skyler and Axios co-founder and CEO Jim VandeHei hosted a fireside chat at the American Express Leadership Academy in partnership with Common Purpose where they discussed what it means to be resilient leaders in an evolving world. Jim shared his advice on how he leads by example: “When you do the right thing in hard moments, others will too. Then think about the next decision, the next right thing. When you do that, when you handle hard things with class and character, you build up so much credibility. That’s when you get people to follow you. It’s amazing how contagious good leadership is.”
