“Trees are not a luxury, but a necessity for a healthy, vibrant community.” In honor of #BlackHistoryMonth, we’re highlighting the people and organizations making real change in communities across the US. Today, we’re spotlighting Jerome Foster II, American Forests’ Tree Equity Ambassador. Growing up in Washington, D.C., Jerome witnessed the absence of something as essential as trees. Today, he’s leading the charge to ensure every neighborhood has access to the life-changing benefits of trees: cleaner air, cooler streets, and healthier lives. We lead the movement to reforest America, from cities to large, forested landscapes.
About us
Founded in 1875, American Forests is the oldest national nonprofit conservation organization in the U.S. Its mission is to restore threatened forest ecosystems and inspire people to value and protect urban and wildland forests. In the past 25 years alone, American Forests has planted nearly 50 million trees in more than 1,000 high-impact forest restoration projects. These projects have restored hundreds of thousands of acres of wildlife habitat, protected vital watersheds and sequestered millions of tons of greenhouse gases. American Forests is also one of the nation’s leading advocates for expanding urban tree canopy and green space, and a key funder of urban forest initiatives that have transformed communities across the country. American Forests congratulates Brooke Rollins on her confirmation as the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture. As a leader in conservation and rural development, the USDA plays a critical role in ensuring the health of our nation’s forests, from large working landscapes to the trees in our cities. We look forward to working with Secretary Rollins and the Trump administration to advance forest conservation. Bipartisan partnerships have long been the foundation of progress in forestry, and we are eager to continue this important work together. 🌲 Do you know what it takes to regrow a forest? In 2024, arborists, competitive tree climbers and reforestation crews teamed up in California to collect 11,330 bushels of cones — enough to grow 57 million seedlings and restore up to approx. 375,000 acres of wildfire-scarred land! This #BlackHistoryMonth we honor, celebrate and elevate the stories of leaders and organizations who are making history right now in the field of forestry. A lack of trees in neighborhoods exacerbates the effects of extreme heat, poor air quality and fewer health benefits for residents. This February we honor those who are doing amazing work to ensure a brighter future for people and forests. Jerome Foster II | Heads Up Houston | People for Community Recovery | Adella Bass-Lawson
