Policies for Action (P4A) is excited to announce six new research projects focusing on the impacts of state and local policies on immigrant communities in the U.S. These studies will shed light on how such policies affect the economic stability, healthcare access, and social inclusion of a diversity of immigrant communities. This research cohort, funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and administered by P4A at Urban Institute, aims to inform public policy that can support a future that includes health equity for everyone. "Deporting one million people a year would cost an annual average of $88 billion, and a one-time effort to deport the full unauthorized population of 11 million would cost many times that — and it’s difficult to imagine how long it would take. ...How many people will be caught up in a deportation machine, and how quickly, is by no means a settled question — and it’s one that a public sympathetic to immigrants should continue to care about the answer to." After initially blocking the Biden administration’s recent move to promote family unity for some U.S. citizens with undocumented spouses in August, a federal judge in Texas issued a final judgment last week ending the parole process altogether. Judge J. Campbell Barker found that the whole concept of “parole in place” – the practice of granting parole to noncitizens already in the United States, which has long been used by various administrations – is not authorized by the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA). "Today, we have one of the most ethnically and culturally diverse metro areas in the nation – and also one of the strongest economies. In the past four years alone, #Houston has created more than 557,000 jobs and is expected to add another 60,000 this year. That’s a staggering number. For comparison, West Virginia, with a declining population, added only about 45,000 jobs during that time for the entire state. In 2021, nearly one-third of Houston’s $537 billion GDP was contributed by immigrants." Read more from Steven Stephens, CEO of Amegy Bank, 👇 https://lnkd.in/eD9M-YzH

The “bipartisan border bill” has been front and center in the presidential election, but it is often presented to the public without clarity on what the bill would actually do. In May, U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) introduced S. 4361, the Border Act of 2024. Although almost all Senate Republicans ultimately voted against the Border Act, most of the provisions in the bill previously garnered bipartisan support. If passed in the future, the Border Act would make significant changes to the U.S. immigration system. Read more: https://lnkd.in/eZa_GbRc
