Microplastics in Antarctic snow—found at 100 times higher levels than previously recorded—underscore the urgent need for stricter measures to limit plastic pollution under the Antarctic Treaty System.

Antarctic krill aren’t just the foundation of the Southern Ocean food web—they’re also #1 at going #2 for the planet. 💩⁠ ⁠ Each tiny pellet of krill poop sinks carbon from the surface to the deep ocean, locking it away for centuries. Yet, recent setbacks at CCAMLR threaten to undo this progress. The world's frozen oceans have hit a historic low, with Arctic & Antarctic sea-ice shrinking beyond all previous records. Less ice means more heat absorption, accelerating global warming and disrupting Earth's climate balance. Between 9 and 13 February, the total Arctic and Antarctic sea-ice extent plummeted to 15.76 million sq km (6.08 million sq miles), according to BBC analysis of US National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) data. This shatters the previous record low of 15.93 million sq km (6.15 million sq miles) set in early 2023. “Every year, every data point suggests that this isn't a temporary shift, but something more permanent, like what we've seen in the Arctic. It is indicating that the Antarctic has moved into a new regime of lower ice extents." — Walter Meier, NSIDC Senior Research Scientist Antarctica is changing before our eyes.
