Investor Tip: Don’t Get Caught in the December Mutual Fund Tax Trap! 💡 This week, we helped a prospective client avoid an additional and unnecessary tax bill of over $22k for a mutual fund their current advisor had just purchased in December. This is a common mistake—and one that’s 100% avoidable with the right planning. 👉 Here’s the issue: Mutual funds distribute capital gains to shareholders at the end of the year. These gains come from trades the fund manager made throughout the year—even if you weren’t invested then! If you buy a mutual fund in December, you could owe taxes on a year’s worth of gains you didn’t benefit from. Ouch. 😣 🚫 How to steer clear of this costly mistake: 1️⃣ Check the fund’s distribution schedule. If it’s close to the payout date, consider waiting. 2️⃣ Time your investments carefully. Postponing your purchase by a few weeks could save you from an unnecessary tax hit. 3️⃣ Consult with a financial advisor. Tax-smart investing strategies are a must for maximizing returns. Don’t let a December decision become an April headache. A little planning today can save you a lot of frustration—and money—down the road. 💸 👉 Have questions? Reach out. We’re here to help you invest wisely and keep taxes in check! Anthony Petsis & Associates, Inc. Marc R. 👉ATTENTION SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS👈 Here are some year-end planning ideas that we are talking to clients about: 1. Max Out Retirement Accounts 👉Employee Side: Contribute the maximum amount to your 401(k), Solo 401(k), or other eligible retirement accounts to reduce taxable income and boost retirement savings. 👉Employer/Profit Sharing Side: Take full advantage of employer contributions to further reduce your tax burden and increase your investment potential. 2. Maximize Health Savings Accounts (HSA) 👉Contribute to an HSA to enjoy triple tax benefits: tax-deductible contributions, tax-free growth, and tax-free withdrawals for qualified medical expenses. Let your HSA balance grow over time. 3. Tax Loss Harvesting 👉Sell losing investments to offset capital gains and reduce your tax bill. The end of the year is an opportune time to accelerate this strategy. 4. Roth Conversions 👉Convert traditional IRA funds to a Roth IRA to take advantage of lower tax brackets or your current tax situation. 5. Max Out 529 Plans 👉Contribute to a 529 plan to save for future education expenses and potentially benefit from state tax deductions or credits. By prioritizing these strategies and considering your specific financial situation, you can significantly reduce your tax liability and enhance your long-term financial goals. Marc R. 🫵 What are we talking about today?? 🫵 💲The average 401k balance of someone in their 50s is $212,400 and the median 401k balance of someone in their 50s is $64,300, according to a study released last week. 😳And that’s just among people with 401(k) retirement investment accounts. Some 20% of adults age 50 and over say they have no retirement savings at all, according to a 2024 AARP survey. 😪As a generation, Gen Xers are the least prepared for retirement. The truth is that many Gen Xers will never be able to retire or that many of us will run out of money. 🕶What should you do if you feel unprepared for retirement? 1. Get help from a financial advisor. The best athletes in the world competing in the Olympics right now all have coaches. Why shouldn't you have a financial coach? 2. Start contributing the maximum to your 401k. The maximum in 2024 is $23,000. 3. If you are on track to contribute the 2024 401k maximum of $23,000, and are 50 or older, consider making an additional catch-up contribution (2024 maximum of $7,500). 4. If your 401k plan allows the option to make Roth 401k contributions (after-tax), you should consider doing this. The money grows tax-free and you can withdraw it tax-free (once you are 59 1/2 and have held the account for 5 years. 5. Use other tax-advantaged investment savings options. One of the best ones that most people are not maximizing is the Health Savings Account (HSA). If you are in a high deductible health plan covering a family you can contribute $8,300 pre-tax, allow the money to accumulate over time, and withdraw the money for health care purposes tax-free. ⏰The clock is ticking Gen Xers. 🧗Make today the day to get your financial future in order. #Newtown #financialfreedom #retiredlife #retirementgoals #buckscounty #retirementplanning #wealthylifestyle #FinancialSuccess #buckscountypa #financialplanning #newtownpa #financialgoals #financialadvisor #retirementplan #retirementincome #FinancialFreedom #genxwomen #genx #RetirementLife #retirementliving #wealthmanagement #FinancialEmpowerment #wealthbuilder #financialliteracy #advisornearme #FinancialIndependence #wealthbuilding #RetireWithConfidence #GenX #ferrisbueller Tony Petsis Alexander Petsis, CFP® ChSNC® Heidi Hirsh, RICP® Marc R.
