World Anti-Microbial Resistance Congress reposted this
🦠 Superbugs ‘could kill 39m people by 2050’ amid rising drug resistance – new research released this week has announced – and there are calls for new antibiotics to be developed to save millions of lives. 💊 But should we really be hyperfocused on drug screening new antibiotics? Or should we look beyond? Earlier this month, at the World Anti-Microbial Resistance Congress in Philadelphia, a cross-section of #antibiofilm thought-leaders came together to discuss the incredible ubiquity of bacterial biofilms (80% of longstanding bacterial problems) and how they are an engine room for #AntimicrobialResistance. Panelists Maud Eijkenboom (Lixa), Steve St. Onge (Clarametyx Biosciences) and Carl Genberg (N8 Medical) shared deeply personal #AMR stories, underlying the drive to pioneer novel antibiofilm technologies and breaking ranks with the predominant antibiotic focus. The 3 companies described the different antibiofilm mechanisms of action, their clinical progress and the hurdles they faced by a funding and regulatory system designed for an outdated “planktonic bacteria” concept. The panel was met by a full room of engaged audience members, showing the support from clinicians and scientists for change. Much kudos to the inimitable Ted Buckley, PhD (Shionogi & Co., Ltd), who expertly managed the lively interactions in that room. One key message: “The post antibiotic era might just be a transition towards understanding that bacterial colonies need to be treated differently from free-floating bacteria. A transition towards clinical flexibility with a multipronged approach of antibiofilms, resistance breakers, antibiotics and others. ” 👏 A big thank you to the World AMR Congress organizers for facilitating this dialogue and to everyone that came along and took part in the discussion.
