Yet another scientific project has been axed- but this one hits close to home. It overlaps with research many colleagues in the ONE Division, AOM SIM Division, AOM IABS Association and GRONEN are deeply engaged in. Worth reflecting on what this trend means for our field. On the shoulders of giants! Talk about empowering others...but behind the work I do stands a community that first empowered me. As I hit a home stretch of sharing my reflections over the recent years of career journey, today I celebrate the academic communities that have shaped me, fueled my growth, and consistently filled my tank with knowledge, resources, training, networks, and sometimes, the simple but powerful gift of recognition. They say academia is lonely – but that hasn't been my story. While our busy schedules often tempt us to prioritize work over community, I've found richness in the academic families that welcome us with open arms. Take the Academy of Management (AOM), the world's largest gathering of management scholars. To the uninitiated, its annual conference of 10,000+ attendees might seem overwhelming. But here's the secret: within this vast ocean exist intimate communities called divisions. These interest-based families transform a sea of faces into familiar shores where scholars speak the same language and share common passions. Through ONE Division, AOM, I've found mentors money can't buy and peers who've become pillars of support. The likes of Viktoria, Dr. Steve, Dr. Bárbara, Dr. Cecilia Värendh, Dr. Kai Hockerts, Prof. Martina Huemann and very recently, Dr. Tima Bansal. In a fiercely competitive arena where acceptance rates hover around 15% among 20,000+ submissions from career professors and PhD/grad students, this community has helped me achieve the improbable – having papers accepted both as an MBA student (2019) and as a PhD student (2024, with Best Paper designation - a recognition reserved for the top 10% of accepted papers). This success wasn't solo – it was nurtured by generous feedback from ONE Division peers during our PhD events. The Decision Sciences Institute (DSI) has been another cornerstone of my journey. Focused on data science and operations management, this smaller but mighty community has been transformative both personally and professionally. My annual presentations here since my MBA days remind me never to judge a book by its cover – some of life's most profound impacts come from unexpected places. Most recently, the Southern Management Association (SMA) has opened its arms to me. Though smaller in size, its intimate setting fosters deep connections and invaluable feedback on research projects. As I work to empower others today, I stand on the shoulders of these institutional giants that have invested in my growth. Beyond any future career path, these communities have given me something invaluable – a testament to the power of collective growth and shared wisdom. What communities have shaped your journey? #AcademicCommunity #Gratitude #ProfessionalDevelopment #ResearchCommunity #CommunityBuilding #PhDLife #AcademyOfManagement #DSI #SMA
