JOOTRH Again at the Forefront of Life-Changing Care The Neuro Camp is back, and once again, it's making a significant impact on lives. The theaters at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) are bustling with activity as four patients are scheduled for surgeries today. "We keep returning because there's a genuine need," said Dr. Bethwell Raori, a neurosurgeon from the USA. "Our passion is to transfer care, service, and knowledge to help people." Sharmaine Morrison, a nurse specializing in neuro spine procedures from the USA, echoed Raori's sentiment. "The people are so grateful. This is my fifth time participating in the Neuro Camp, and my first was in 2018." For Morrison, mission trips are a way to give back. "We could write a book about the gratitude we receive. The things we often discard in the UK can be repurposed here to change lives." The September 2024 Neuro Camp aims to provide solutions for brain and spinal diseases and is expected to benefit approximately 40 screened patients. Held every three months, the camp is an initiative of the Kisumu Neuroscience Initiative, in partnership, JOOTRH, and Dokis Advice. Over the ten-day camp, specialized nurses and theater staff from around the world will be offering their services. The local team, including Dr.Lee Ogutha and orthopedic surgeon Dr. Walter Adero, will also be providing their expertise. The team has brought a comprehensive supply of equipment, including operating room instruments, nails, screws for the spine, and other essentials to ensure the success of the surgeries. Accompanying Raori are operating room nurses, scrub assistants, and a global invasive spine representative.

We are so proud of the work that Bethwel Raore, MD, FAANS and his team is doing in Kisumu, Kenya. Dr.Raore and his wife wanted to give back to their home country by starting a nonprofit, Giving Back to Kenya. In 2009, Dr.Raore started traveling to Kenya to give back to the community. One of the things the nonprofit does is sponsor kids to help put them through high school. There have been 65 students in the program, including 19 that are currently enrolled in school, and 40 students that have completed high school. In 2013, he and his wife started making trips to Kenya to focus on patients, and have continued making trips every year since. The Kisumu Neuroscience Initiative, which is a part of Giving Back to Kenya, consists of 3 Neurosurgeons, based in Georgia, Ohio, and Germany, all originally from Kenya. Each surgeon makes a yearly trip (or quarterly visits) to Kisumu to provide continuous care for patients. In 2018, the city did not have any Neurosurgery services that people could access. Dr.Raore and his team committed to one hospital in Kisumu, which is  the third largest city in Kenya, with the population of over 1 million people, and roughly 12 million people in the catchment area. In addition to providing direct patient care, the Kisumu Neuroscience Initiative, provides medical student training and resident teaching. In 2020, a resident from Nairobi, Kenya decided to stay in Kisumu, and help provide continuous care when the Kisumu Neuroscience Initiative teams leave.
