Recently, I scrolled through the Kansas City subgroup on Reddit and saw an interesting post wondering what the relationship was between two fast food chains in our area: Whataburger and Andy’s Frozen Custard. While the original poster assumed that there was something suspicious going on, it did spark a conversation of people noting other retailers and restaurants that often are located near each other. It happens often, and for good reason: many retailers and restaurants use similar strategies during the site selection process.

In our never-ending quest to provide the highest possible quality and range of demographics, we have a busy year ahead of us. Most of our efforts are focused on continuing to integrate parcel, address, and dwelling level data into our core demographic estimates. Along the way, we will introduce new data and highlight areas where we have achieved significant advances over current industry standards.

A few weeks ago, the San Francisco 49ers played the Buffalo Bills in an epic game after Highmark stadium was buried in 2 feet of snow. The snow was so heavy before the game that they paid fans $20 an hour to shovel snow inside the stadium to get it ready. Obviously, the Bills are far more accustomed to playing in cold temperatures, but would that make a difference in the outcome of the game? And does it make an impact on who you should start for your fantasy team? We looked at our environmental data for more information.

There are lots of maps that show the favorite Christmas movies by state, favorite movies by age, and other demographic breakdowns. We’ve even talked about how demographics could fix the plots of Hallmark Christmas movies. While those things are potentially interesting to some, we care deeply about the geography of things, so we wanted to make a list of Christmas classics by geographic location. So, where do most Christmas movies take place? Let’s take a look.

You might think that the biggest factor in your commute is the number of people on the road. In fact, geography is often the biggest limiting factor in shortening the time you spend in your car, or sometimes, a way for you to make your commute faster. We look at various metropolitan areas and look at interesting drive times, which makes us wonder, should drive times impact your trade area analysis?

As of January 1, 2025, Applied Spatial Technology (AST) will formally become a division of Applied Geographic Solutions after many years of operations as a sister company. The AST division of AGS will continue to enhance the Freeway drive time system, which will be the first of a series of analytical plug-ins to be developed over the next several years.

Last week, I headed to California to visit my family. While we were there, the Santa Ana winds picked up, and as a result, the power was shut off at my parent’s house as a fire precaution for 2 days. On the second day, I was in desperate need of an outlet to charge my devices and Wi-Fi to get some work done. After searching for an outlet and a seat at multiple local coffee shops, my husband made a bold suggestion: isn’t there a café at the mall? Surely, we could find some outlets there. And it was then that our unlikely hero was found, power restored, and work completed. But it got me thinking about times past when this mall served as the center of the community, and not as a secondary thought for a place we could park ourselves for a few hours to use up some free electricity.
