According to the National Weather Service, a commercial passenger plane is struck by lightning on average once or twice a year. But don’t worry, they are built to withstand the current. The fuselage, or main body of the aircraft, has components built into its structure that allow it to function as a Faraday cage. This design conducts the current across the plane's surface, preventing any voltage from reaching the interior parts and keeping everyone safe. #AirTravel #AerospaceManufactuing #Airplane #AppliedUnderwritersAviation

Does the food and drinks taste different to you while flying? You're not imagining it! At around 30,000 feet, the humidity drops to about 20% or lower, which reduces our sense of smell and, consequently, our ability to taste food accurately. Additionally, lower air pressure affects the sensitivity of our taste buds, diminishing our perception of sweet and savory flavors. To counteract these changes, airline chefs adjust their recipes and continually seek new ways to enhance the in-flight dining experience. #Flying #Travel #Airline #AppliedUnderwritersAviation

Like many industries, aviation professionals have their own unique jargon. Here are a few examples to help you speak like an expert: • Air Pocket: A temporary burst of turbulence • Feet Wet: Alert to air traffic controllers when a military aircraft is flying over a body of water • George: Automatic pilot system • Boom Carpet: Area on the ground where a sonic boom from shockwaves is heard as a jet passes over • Five by Five: Radio reception is loud and clear • Weathered In: Forced to stay grounded due to bad weather #Pilots #Aerospace #Aircraft #AppliedUnderwritersAviation

Have you ever wondered how a plane is able to lift off the ground? The answer lies in the dynamics of air. The faster air moves, the lower the air pressure. Airplane wings are engineered to cause air to move faster over the top of the wing, resulting in lower air pressure above the wing and higher pressure below it. This difference in pressure allows the bottom of the wing to push the airplane up! #Airplane #Aerospace #Flight #AppliedUnderwritersAviation

“I feel the need…the need for speed.” We hear the term Mach speed surrounding aviation and in action movies, but what does that mean? Well, it is the relationship between the speed of an aircraft and the speed of sound. For example, Mach 1 is equal to the speed of sound, which is about 760 miles per hour at sea level (the speed of sound varies depending on altitude and atmospheric conditions). To put it into perspective, a commercial airliner flies around Mach 0.74-0.80 (or 480-575 mph) and the fastest manned aircraft was the North American X-15 which reached a speed of Mach 6.72, or 4,520 miles per hour, which was over 6 times the speed of sound! #Aviation #Aerospace #Flying #AppliedUnderwritersAviation

Jet lag is a temporary disruption in your sleep schedule that results from traveling across several time zones. Here are a few tips to help overcome the problem: 1. A few days before your trip, gradually adjust your sleep schedule to better match the time zone of your destination. When you're on the plane, continue this adjustment by aligning your sleep with your destination’s time zone. 2. Drink plenty of water. According to the Mayoclinic.org, dehydration can make jet lag symptoms worse. 3. Use caffeine mindfully. You'll want to be strategic, as it can interfere with your ability to fall asleep. #Travel #Tourism #TravelIndustry #AppliedUnderwritersAviation

On this day in 2001, our country experienced an immense tragedy as the terrorist attacks on September 11th claimed the lives of thousands of our fellow Americans, including many brave first responders who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty. This day marks a somber moment in our history, reminding us of the profound loss and the enduring resilience of our nation in the face of such adversity.
