June marks Pride Month! According to the HRC Foundation, 36% of LGBTQ+ people in general and 56% of transgender people are disabled. The ONS reports that people who identified as lesbian, gay, bisexual or another minority sexual orientation (LGB+) were more likely to be disabled than the overall population of England and Wales. According to Stonewall, Two-thirds (64%) of LGBTQ+ people had experienced anti-LGBT+ violence or abuse. almost half of LGBT disabled students (47%) have been the target of negative comments or conduct from other students. And that's not ok. We need to do more. At Apputee, we are LGBTQIA+ positive and are solid allies of the community. We wanted to take this opportunity to promote some cool resources within the LGBTQIA space. VODA - A brand new LGBTQIA+ Mental Wellness App run by an incredibly lovely team. They feature self-guided therapy programmes designed by leading LGBTQIA+ psychotherapists. Jessica Kellgren-Fozard - Jessica regularly talks about LGBTQIA+ and Disability history and topics on her YouTube channel, as well as ways to talk to children about disability. Helsa - A startup which provides LGBTQIA+ focused DEI training sessions. They are currently building a training program in VR. Have any more resources you want to recommend? Drop them in the comments!
About us
Apputee is an app designed to guide new amputees through their hospital stay and subsequent recovery, connecting them to a support network of experts and other amputees. Over 1 million amputations occur globally, and amputees often feel alone and scared. The app will accompany new amputees through their recovery, using progress trackers and a gamified system to help amputees get the motivation they need. The app will also accumulate knowledge from medical professionals, such as doctors and mental health specialists, as well as interviews with other amputees about their experiences. Apputee helps ease anxieties around the unknown and creates a roadmap from hospital back to their new “normal” – from understanding medication to navigating their return to work.
