About us
At Arbor, we’re sustainably powering the present while erasing emissions of the past. Our innovative system transforms organic waste into clean, reliable electricity while capturing carbon dioxide at scale. Founded by space tech veterans who pivoted from building technology to explore new planets to protecting our own, Arbor leverages cutting-edge aerospace technology to tackle climate change. Our mission is to bring gigawatts of clean, dependable baseload power online while removing gigatons of legacy carbon emissions. Earth is the most important spaceship we’ll ever have, and we’re dedicated to restoring its balance. Drawing on our team’s deep aerospace expertise, we’ve created a power system that meets today’s demands while repairing yesterday’s damage. Arbor’s engine, fueled by organic waste, improves on Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) using advancements in oxy-combustion, supercritical turbomachinery, and additive manufacturing. The system turns waste—like overgrown brush, crop residues, and food waste—into clean power, reducing wildfire risks and landfill emissions. The captured CO2 is permanently stored deep underground, where it mineralizes into rock, ensuring it never returns to the atmosphere. At Arbor, we envision a future where human progress and environmental stewardship work in harmony to power our world and bring the planet into balance. We’re proudly backed by climate-focused investors including Gigascale Capital, Voyager Ventures, Lowercarbon Capital, and Cantos Ventures.

Our hearts are heavy as we witness the devastation caused by the fires here in Los Angeles. The Arbor team is based in El Segundo (a tight-knit community in LA) and we’ve seen incredible response from the ESFD on the frontlines. We’re heartbroken by the destruction and loss these fires bring to the neighbors, wildlife, and landscapes that define our home. For our CEO Brad Hartwig, wildfires are deeply personal. As a search-and-rescue specialist (both with Marin SAR and the California Air National Guard), witnessing the devastating effects of CA wildfires served as a turning point in his life that inspired Arbor—changing his mission from reaching for the stars to protecting the planet we all call home. As engineers, scientists, and climate advocates, we work every day to create solutions that honor that same purpose: safeguarding the Earth and its ecosystems. But today, we simply want to extend our deepest compassion to those affected and our gratitude to the firefighters and first responders risking everything to protect our communities. If you’re looking for ways to support, we encourage donations to local relief efforts or organizations like the California Community Foundation’s Wildfire Relief Fund. We remain committed to the vision of a world where we build more sustainable solutions to prevent these tragedies from becoming the new normal. Stay safe, LA. We’re with you.

Meet AJ Fillo, Ph.D., Arbor’s Sr. Combustion & Test Engineer! With a career spanning rocket engines, fluid dynamics, and even designing pyrotechnical water fountains, AJ brings a wealth of expertise—and creativity—to our work of transforming organic waste into clean baseload power and carbon removal. AJ is responsible for unraveling the intricate physics and chemistry behind our gasifier and oxy-combustor systems. “I use first principles as a compass,” he says, “mapping out the physics space so our hardware team has a clear template to build from.” It can be uncharted territory—one that requires the kind of innovative thinking that AJ honed during his time at Relativity Space and in academic research on turbulent fluid mechanics and combustion. AJ is also Arbor’s in-house photographer and videographer, putting his creative gifts to work. AJ came to Arbor for the chance to build something new with a team that cares. “Arbor is genuinely doing something novel that has the potential to change the world,” he shares. “The passion here is unmatched, and the solution we’re building just makes sense—it’s elegant, thoughtful, and ready to meet the challenges ahead.” We’re honored to have AJ’s spirit of curiosity, innovation, and humanity on our team as we work to transform organic waste into carbon-negative power and bring the planet into balance.

Energy experts agree: biomass is an essential part of the clean energy mix, offering 24/7 power that complements wind and solar. But for too long, inefficiencies and environmental concerns have kept its potential locked away. Arbor’s approach changes the equation. By efficiently turning organic waste into clean, carbon-negative power, our technology can tackle two challenges at once: decarbonizing energy and addressing the environmental impact of waste. This Fast Company article from Todd Thomas at WoodChuck.ai delves into why biomass is such a crucial yet underutilized solution in the clean energy transition. It’s an exciting time to rethink what’s possible when innovation meets one of nature’s oldest resources. #circulareconomy #cleanpower #carbonremoval

From aerospace dreams to Earth-saving realities—our CEO Brad Hartwig shared with Mike Schroepfer how a career rooted in rocket engineering evolved into a mission to combat the climate crisis.
"I focused my whole career on getting off this planet, and now was face to face with the climate crisis in a way that made me think I really needed to focus on being part of the solution for here on Earth." For most people working in climate tech, there’s a moment when the urgency of the problem becomes impossible to ignore. For Brad Hartwig, Co-founder and CEO of Arbor Energy, that moment came while responding to California wildfires with the National Guard. With a background in aerospace and aspirations of becoming a NASA astronaut, Brad pivoted his skills to address the climate crisis. Diving deep into IPCC reports, Brad came to learn how global decarbonization alone was no longer enough—gigaton-scale carbon removal would be essential to maintaining a livable planet. He set out to find the most cost-effective way to draw down billions of tons of CO₂. His solution—integrating carbon removal into clean power production—had surprising parallels with technologies he had worked on before at SpaceX. With that, Arbor was born.
