Now the dust has settled I wanted to recap on ReSHAPE2024. ReSHAPE was my answer to the question of 'What is a SHAPE venture?'. Although the number of ventures was small, the pipeline was rapidly growing and there were already some big successes from Vivid Economics (Economics) to Wise Responder (International Development) to In Place of War(Music). ReSHAPE's goal was to bring that together and show researchers what was possible and Universities, Government and Business what was happening. With Sean BC Farran's flair for events (and to a lesser extent waistcoats) we kicked off the first ever event for SHAPE ventures in 2022. The first two years were a labour of love, a small core were really interested but I had to lean on my personal network to get the numbers up but the energy was there at the event and after -people loved it and loved the sense of community and identity that was forming around it. Fast forward to this year and for the first time we sold out - 2 months in advance. More than that though, with the support of the peerless Emma Salgard Cunha we built our best programme to date - to name but a few: Erin Young, Shannon Vallor Bill Thompson and Juan Mateos-Garcia had a brilliant discussion on AI that avoided the usual boosterism/doomsterism and instead looked at both what it means for SHAPE research itself as well as how SHAPE research will influence AI. Zainab Kabba Lorraine Charles Joanna Burch-Brown and Oğuz Alyanak brought to light to the powerful trend of Advocacy, academia and entrepreneurship Malte Gerhold Medina Johnson Frida Koslowski and Ruth Cousens focused on rapidly emerging innovations in Health coming from SHAPE researchers Perhaps biased but to my mind, SHAPE ventures are and will continue to completely transform how we think about impact from social sciences, Humanities and Arts and we'll be better for it. I'll leave on my favourite (paraphrased) thought of the event from Tollulah Oni - on the issue of why a venture? Tollulah said, if I was trying to solve a problem like designing healthy urban environments in developing cities, in the time it takes to apply for a research grant, hear back, begin the research and then write it up - entire neighbourhoods have been planned and built - a venture can deliver solutions at the rate problems emerge. A special thanks to Aspect Social Sciences, Humanities and Arts Network The British Academy ESRC: Economic and Social Research Council Mishcon de Reya LLP, ARC Accelerator and Julia Black- because absolutely none of it would be possible without such incredible partners and support. 🌟 What a privilege to be part of something so impactful! 🌟 It is a great honour to have teamed up with The British Academy, ESRC: Economic and Social Research Council, ARC Accelerator, and Mishcon de Reya LLP for the third edition of reSHAPE, and it was nothing short of inspiring. 🎉 The event showcased the incredible energy and momentum within the SHAPE commercialisation sector. From AI to Activism, the conversations were rich, thought-provoking, and forward-looking. As the world’s only showcase event for impact at scale SHAPE ventures, reSHAPE reaffirms a central thesis – that SHAPE ventures are poised to infiltrate virtually every facet of society and the economy. In doing so, they are reshaping how society, the economy, and governments think about and address the multifaceted challenges of the 21st century. It was amazing to connect with so many familiar faces while welcoming new ones into the fold. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed to making this unique gathering such a resounding success, with spacial thanks to Sean BC Farran and Chris Fellingham for bringing us all together.
