Archer Career is in #love with microlearning? Why? In his book, The Checklist Manifesto, Dr. Atul Gawande shares the history of the US Army's 1935 flight competition for airplane manufacturers. After the crash of the Boeing Model 299, the army's findings found no mechanical errors. It was found to be pilot error, stating "too much airplaine for one man to fly." Afterward, the US Army purchased a few as test planes. The test pilots then got together and created an ingeniously simple approach for flying the new plane. They created a pilot's checklist. This checklist was simple, brief, and to the point, with a step-by-step process for takeoff. From this, the pilots flew 1.8 million miles without an accident. The Army ultimately ordered 13,000 planes which were then called the B-17, and used in World War II for bombing Germany, resulting in the successful military campaign in Europe. How does this relate to today and why Archer Career loves #microlearning? For many highly skilled professionals, our work today is more complex than ever. It is challenging to deliver fully with quality, let alone excellence from memory alone. We have pressures, multiple demands, tight timelines, and more and more scarcity of resources. As Gawande states, "multiple fields...have become too much airplane for one person to fly." Like checklists, microlearning provides the minimum necessary information and steps, and makes the information dissemination very clear. To learn, particularly for career and professional skills. Work today, for many students and professionals, has a high cognitive load. We are tasking our brain with memory, attention, and thoroughness, plus the creativity and analysis required for innovation and problem-solving.
