In honor of Rheumatic Disease Awareness Month, we are diving deep into the differences between Osteoarthritis (OA) and Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). Let’s start with this detailed image of joint anatomy to understand how these conditions affect the joints differently. 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐲 𝐉𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭 A healthy joint is cushioned by smooth cartilage and surrounded by a protective synovial membrane, allowing for easy movement and minimal pain. Maintaining joint health through exercise and proper nutrition is key! 𝐎𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐨𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐬 (𝐎𝐀) In Osteoarthritis, the cartilage wears down over time, leading to pain and reduced joint function. This wear-and-tear results in bone-on-bone contact, which can cause joint stiffness and swelling. 𝐑𝐡𝐞𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐢𝐝 𝐀𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐬 (𝐑𝐀) Rheumatoid Arthritis causes the immune system to attack the synovial membrane, leading to inflammation, pain, and joint damage. Over time, this inflammation can erode cartilage and bone, significantly affecting joint function.
