ARIEN Project Stakeholders Community: First Online Kick-Off Meeting! Institute for Corporative Security Studies (ICS) proudly hosted the first online kick-off meeting for the ARIEN Project Stakeholders Community, marking a major milestone as we come together to tackle the critical challenges of fighting illicit drug production and trafficking. Session Highlights: Ernesto La Mattina shared an insightful overview of Project ARIEN, setting a strong foundation for the work ahead. Marko Mihalič introduced the Stakeholders’ Community, emphasizing our vision for collaboration and meaningful engagement. Gerardine Meloy delivered an engaging and thought-provoking talk on the Societal Implications of Potential AI Side Effects, shedding light on both the opportunities and challenges that AI brings. This meeting is the start of a shared mission to support ARIEN Project - a groundbreaking initiative that uses AI tools to strengthen efforts to combat illicit drug production and trafficking across the European Union (EU). Last week Theodoros Alexakis from our partner ICCS presented the #FALCON project at the European Ports Alliance Cluster IV workshop in Brussels. 🎯The workshop aimed to connect actors, who have innovative #technical_solutions for fighting drug trafficking and organised crime, with public authorities (police, customs, coast guards etc.) and private stakeholders (shipping companies, terminal operators etc.) who need such solutions. At the workshop different EU-funded projects presented their innovations, e.g. #AI technologies (Promenade - EUH2020, ARIEN Project), highly accurate electrosensors (BorderSens) or a cosmic ray tomograph (SilentBorder) to detect illegal drugs or other goods. The FALCON presentation focused on our Use Case 3 on #Border_Corruption. Theodoros presented our technical solutions we have so far: (1) 🚗 our vehicle detection technology, developed by our partner Centre for Research & Technology Hellas (CERTH) with video footage from our partner VSAT (Lithuanian Border Guard authority) (2) ⚠️the real-time risk matrix, developed by ICCS (Institute of Communication and Computer Systems, Greece), which offers the capability to border guard authorities to have in real-time an estimation of low-, medium- and high-risk cars that may be part of corruption schemes when they cross the borders. As the FALCON project was the only one focusing on corruption, the workshop participants were very interested in our project. Because even if there are technologies for detecting illegal goods, corruption still enables the trafficking of illicit goods. And that’s why we need technologies to fight this. That’s why we need FALCON. Apart from these solutions the workshop participants agreed that we also need #policy­_guidelines and maybe an update to the current legislation in order to better tackle phenomena of trafficking of illicit goods through borders and ports. -- What is the European Ports Alliance? 💡The European Commission, together with the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the EU, launched the European Ports Alliance and its Public-Private Partnership in January 2024 to step up the fight against drug trafficking and organised crime. It aims to bring all stakeholders together to strengthen #security in EU ports. #anticorruption #fightingorganisedcrime #HorizonEurope

Last week (June 13 and 14, 2024), the 2nd General Assembly of the Horizon Europe ARIEN Project was hosted by the Centre for Research & Technology Hellas (CERTH), in Thessaloniki. ARIEN develops Artificial IntelligencE in fighting illicit drugs production and traffickiNg and involves a consortium of LEAs, Universities and technological partners. It is always a very nice challenge to seek the right balance between the most advanced technologies and the valorization and empowerment of the 'human factor', which remains essential even when dealing with Artificial Intelligence.

We are proud to be a part of the ARIEN Project! The 2nd General Assembly in Thessaloniki was a fantastic opportunity to collaborate and share insights with all partners. From June 13 to 14, 2024, the 2nd General Assembly of the ARIEN Project was held in the Greek city of Thessaloniki, organized by the Center for Research & Technology Hellas (CERTH). The ARIEN project focuses on the use of artificial intelligence to effectively combat the production and trafficking of illicit drugs. The event was attended by a representative of ICS Ljubljana, Marko Mihalič Mihalic. We were joined by Slovenian partners who are part of the consortium, namely the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Slovenia, the Post Office of Slovenia and the University of Maribor. The assembly was a great opportunity for all partners to exchange ideas for optimizing activities, share progress and collaborate on future strategies. We especially thank the organizers for their exceptional coordination and exceptional hospitality, and we are already looking forward to the next meeting.
