National Military Fitness & Wellness Month: A Call to Action In November 2021, I established National Military Fitness & Wellness Month to highlight a critical issue facing our armed forces: the alarming rise in obesity rates and declining physical activity among U.S. military personnel & their families. Every November, I highlight this growing concern, providing resources on physical activity, nutrition, sleep, and recovery to support the health and readiness of the military community. Alarming stats A recent study from The American Security Project reveals that 68% of active-duty service members are impacted by weight issues, with obesity now the leading disqualifier for military applicants and a significant factor in in-service injuries and medical discharges. #Military obesity rates have more than doubled from 10.4% in 2012 to 21.6% in 2022 while eating disorders surged by 79% from 2017 to 2021. This month, I'm spotlighting the Armed Forces Wellness Center (AFWC) – a comprehensive resource of nearly 40 centers in the US, Europe & Asia for health & performance optimization. Staffed by expert health professionals, AFWCs provide free, evidence-based programs to enhance individual & unit readiness for eligible service members & their families. With 80% of current #service members having a military connection & the majority of future #recruits coming from this group, fully supporting & resourcing AFWCs is in our best interest & essential to #recruitment, #nationalsecurity & #militaryreadiness. AFWCs leverage advanced mobile testing technology to provide immediate feedback on physical fitness, helping service members reduce injury risks & improve performance. Open to all Military Health System beneficiaries, these centers champion a holistic approach to #health & #wellness within the military #community. Three Ways to Get Started with AFWC: • Referral by a #healthcare provider • Referral by your unit • Self-referral (info link below) As '25 quickly approaches, let’s commit "to be fit" & get a head start on the top New Year's resolution—getting in shape! The AFWC team looks forward to helping you reach your #fitness goals. Good luck & have fun! A heartfelt thank you to my friend Laura Mitvalsky, Director, Total Force Fitness, Defense Health Agency Public Health & her incredible team for their #professionalism, #dedication & #unwavering support of all who rely on the AFWC services.
