NeedsList, acquired by Armillaria at the end of 2023, has delivered more than $35 million of value to more than 800,000 people around the world. This is testament to its co-founders Natasha Freidus and Amanda Levinson's vision and dogged commitment to improving the flow of humanitarian aid in crisis and disaster contexts. The recent experience with Hurricane Helene, where we are supporting the response and recovery efforts on the ground in North Carolina, and the sheer volume of requests from folks wanting to use the platform in their communities in the wake of Helene have brought home to us the urgent need to make it radically more accessible and affordable. Given the ever increasing number and impact of climate and humanitarian crises all over the world, we are now evolving NeedsList to make it available for free, for local community organisations and non-profits that are often on the frontlines of responding to disasters. And we need your help. Please consider making a year end donation (tax deductible in the US) through our foundation: https://lnkd.in/gPGGWiRg

We're honored to be on this list, and it would be great to work more closely with all mentioned. And of course with you, Tris Lumley 😊
Who's inspiring you in philanthropy right now? I've been lucky enough to have a bunch of inspiring conversations this week, hearing about exciting and challenging work that's being done in philanthropy. These examples and wonderful leaders always give me hope, energy and ideas about how to develop my own thinking and practice. I've particularly been looking for examples of interesting field-building practice, in which foundations are working alongside grantee partners to achieve much more than they could just through individual grants to those organisations. I know there's tremendous work out there, but it's not always that visible to others, or easy for others to learn from and incorporate into their own practice. Like convening grantees from different sectors to see whether there are emergent areas of common purpose - thanks Paul Hamlyn Foundation. Or complex and long-term journeys to build coalitions around shared priorities and plans, working alongside grantee partners like the Joffe Trust https://lnkd.in/gT43QTW6. Or the fascinating work that Armillaria Cameron Burgess & Astrid Scholz are doing to harness and connect data and social impact solutions within and for the benefit of philanthropy. And others that are in development and not yet widely shared, but really exciting to see and learn from. I'd love to hear who's inspiring you! Photo by Austin Chan on Unsplash

Another day, another natural disaster. According to our friends at Good360, "Hurricane Helene made landfall near Perry, FL at 11:10 pm last night at a Category 4 hurricane (130-156 mph winds). Helene ravished the Florida coastline with 140 mph winds and storm surge. Tropical Storm Helene and is now tracking inland across the Southeast through Georgia, Kentucky, Tennessee, South Carolina and North Carolina. Over 20 lives have been lost. Over 800 survivors are in evacuation centers." We are glad that the disaster recovery team from Good360 is on the case, as are dozens of local volunteer organizations and large national responders like the Red Cross. Since we bought NeedsList, we have been learning a lot about the urgent needs arising during and in the immediate wake of a disaster, but also about the longterm recovery that survivors face. We believe that technology like NeedsList can help with all of that, and also increase community resilience by making it easier to anticipate needs and pre-position supplies. Our thoughts are with the survivors and first responders during this chaotic time. ❤️

The patterns are undeniable: the effects of climate change will be felt more frequently and more harshly by more communities around the world. But knowing what’s coming means we can prepare. We bought NeedsList in no small part to put it in service of disaster preparedness and community resilience—because once a disaster hits, it’s really difficult to get an accurate picture of who needs what where. https://lnkd.in/gjd7rm9H

ICYMI, ImpactPHL featured our acquisition of NeedsList in a recent article, which is chockfull of lessons learned and suggestions from NeedsList founders Natasha Freidus and Amanda Levinson: https://lnkd.in/eUaGatkU ~ It's been quite a journey, and as Tasha and Amanda can attest, there are significant gaps in the capital ecosystem for impact tech companies such as ours: too few impact investors are focused on M&A, there are no search or roll-up funds, and exiting to community and / or to opensource comes with its own set up community maintenance, management and governance challenges. 😅
