  • If generative AI inherently produces misinformation, how will that impact industries with low tolerance for risk? Neeti Sanyal, our Executive Creative Director, comments on the need for AI models that account for hallucinations and the inherently sycophantic nature of AI. Especially in industries like healthcare and finance, where those most vulnerable suffer the highest consequences. • As generative AI asks for more and more personal data to help with complex tasks, how could data from these features be misused in the future? Chad Hall, Senior Design Director, comments on introducing just enough positive friction into product design workflows to consider potential impacts of all potential bad actors; whether that be a user, our teams, or even future teams that have access to data the feature might collect. • “The values that got us here are not the values that are going to get us out.” – Katya Fels Smyth, Founder and CEO of The Full Frame Initiative At #nycclimateweek, each conversation made us think about what ‘climate resilience’ means to us: how it’s important to reflect on how we got here and acknowledge the urgency of climate change all while looking ahead. We understand how the systems we live within are not healthy for the planet and to get to a better place will mean rebuilding our processes and infrastructure. While humans can be resistant to change, the imminent need for change is an opportunity for us to collectively shape the world in which we want to live. Many thanks to those who hosted insightful conversations and workshops at NYC Climate Week, such as The Nest Climate Campus, World Wildlife Fund, CARE, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, kyu Collective, Sustaining All Life, The Full Frame Initiative, The Serica Initiative, NYC Dept of Energy, and Pratt Center for Planning and the Environment.

  • Such kind words from Jon Stewart last week. It’s been wonderful working with @usafacts to support the team and their mission to make government data easy to understand. Let’s all get talking again, especially at this critical time in our election, when facts matter.

  • How will AI change our daily interactions, ultimately shifting our social habits? In the video below, Piyali Sircar, our Lead Researcher, comments on how AI-enabled products can change the way we choose to spend our time, or fundamentally interact with one another. This is already happening with how we interact with our smart home speakers and increasingly with AI chatbots that have a distinct character and personality. This video is a part of a mini-series featuring our strategists, designers, and researchers utilizing the Tarot Cards of Tech to share their perspective of AI’s broad implication on responsibilities, culture, and society. Artefact created the Tarot Cards to help innovators think deeply about scenarios around scale, disruption, usage, equity, and access. With the recent developments and democratization of AI, we revisited these cards to imagine a better tech future that accounts for unintended consequences and our values we hold as a society. The way we approach building with AI is multifaceted. How are you accounting for the cultural impact of your products and business operations? Comment below! • How will AI change our culture for better or worse? Will AI disrupt our rituals, or create new ones? In the video below, Jeff Turkelson, our Senior Strategy Director, comments on the advent of autonomous vehicles impacting the coming of age moment where teenagers get their driver license. This cultural shift opens an opportunity for companies of all kinds to celebrate this key moment of independence for youth.
