Let's give a warm welcome to Payton Chopp! 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝗔𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝗧𝗼𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿? I teach ballet at Arts Together! My main job is to work with students and share the joys of dance in a way that is both safe and informative. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘁 𝗔𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝗧𝗼𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿? While this is my first season teaching at Arts Together, I have been a part of the community for the past year as a student and a Rainbow Dance Company member. I’ve found my dance home at Arts Together. Surrounded by people who have the same love and passion for movement, I feel safe to explore the body and research its forms in a kind and compassionate setting. I’m excited to share my own practice with the students of Arts Together in a place that deeply aligns with my personal values as a human and teacher. 𝗪𝗵𝗼 𝗶𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁/𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗼𝗳 𝗮𝗿𝘁? Two of my favorite dance companies are Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and Ballet Hispánico. I love some good, strong, crisp unison, and these are two of the best modern dance companies in the world- they deliver every time. Musically, I love the lyricism of Indigo De Souza and Sturgill Simpson. They just get it. “It’s so beautiful, everything is a part of me” (Sturgill Simpson); “There’s only love, there’s only moving through and trying your best” (Indigo De Souza). Let's give a warm welcome to our newest Dance Instructor, Ren Mauney (they/them)! Ren will be leading our Creative Choreography Master Class this Summer. 𝗙𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘁 𝗔𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝗧𝗼𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿: I am an activist as well as an artist, and so democratic spaces are a very important part of the way I share my practice. Arts Together aims to be a space where difference can not only exist, but thrive, and where we actively learn and grow from those encounters. The opportunity to share my practice in an environment that facilitates that kind of community and those values is always a privilege and something very meaningful to me. 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘄𝗶𝘀𝗱𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗴𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂: In a moment of questioning some major life decisions last year, a dear friend asked me if the things I said I wanted for my life and the decisions I was actually making correlated or contradicted each other. This was a really helpful way for me to think about my life, particularly as I am a person who has immigrated many, many times and has an artistic life that often happens out of a suitcase, and in navigating languages and cultures that are often new to me. Making decisions towards the things I most desire, despite how terrifying or de-stabilizing it might be at times, has allowed my life to become an actual reflection of my art practice, and vice versa. So I continue to ask myself this question: is this decision responding to desire or to fear? 𝗙𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁/𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗼𝗳 𝗮𝗿𝘁: One artist who continues to inspire my own practice is the painter and performance artist Carolee Schneemann, particularly her work "Interior Scroll". I am also inspired by the photography of Sally Mann, and in particular her series "Immediate Family" and "At Twelve" have long been a reference for me. At the opening day of Arts Together Summer, we were thrilled and honored to welcome Genesis Inspiration Foundation and local Genisis retailers.
