  • ASA-SSGG SHORT COURSE SERIES: A Practical Introduction to Microbiome Data Analysis Course Instructors: Dr. Michael C. Wu and Dr. Ni Zhao TA: Dr. Shilan Li February 04, 06, 11 and 13, 2025. Noon to 2:00 PM (EST) (4 x 2-Hour Live Sessions over Two Weeks) The microbiome plays a fundamental role in human health and diseases, influencing a wide range of conditions. This short course aims to provide a practical introduction to key concepts and methodologies used in microbiome data analysis. We will cover topics including bioinformatic tools and standard statistical methodologies including those for community-level analysis, individual taxon analysis, and data integration. We will focus on the most commonly used methods in practice, offering hands-on experience with example data sets and reproducible code. This course is designed for participants who have a basic understanding of statistics and epidemiology and are familiar with R or Python. Detailed knowledge of the microbiome is not assumed. Emphasis is on the practical deployment of contemporaneous methods. The STATGEN 2025 conference will be held from Wednesday, May 21 to Friday, May 23, 2025, in Minneapolis, MN. Please submit your ideas for invited session topics by November 15, 2024, using the following form: STATGEN 2025 Session Proposal Form: https://lnkd.in/ei45FcmT. We welcome session proposals that highlight cutting-edge advances in genetic and genomic data and technologies, and encourage the inclusion of speakers who conduct impactful research but do not frequently attend statistics conferences. Each invited session can include either: 4 speakers, or 3 speakers plus 1 discussant. Initial submissions should include the following information: Session title Description/motivation of the session Session chair Speaker names, affiliations, and emails Titles of each talk SSGG believes that diverse perspectives and representative speakers enhance the quality of sessions and the conference overall. We encourage session organizers to consider diversity and representation in speakers, including research focus, career stage, industry/government/academia, gender, and race/ethnicity. Topics across applied, theoretical, bioethics, or data privacy areas related to genetics and genomics are welcome.
