Asia Collections Network - Europe

From 28th October until 3rd November, Asia Collections Network - Europe, in collaboration with CREOPS - Centre de Recherches sur l’Extrême Orient de Paris – SORBONNE and with the support of Culture Moves Europe, spent an intensive week-long programme of engaging, connecting, and learning with colleagues from France and building a stronger network of professionals in the field. The week was enriched with not only an insightful workshop with papers about research, case studies, exhibitions, and collections of Asian materials in France, Portugal, Sweden, Latvia, Poland, Slovenia and Greece but also multiple visits, tours with curators and specialists working on Asian collections in such museums as the Musée du Louvre, Musée national des arts asiatiques - Guimet and Musée D’Ennery, Musée du quai Branly - Jacques Chirac, Musée Cernuschi, Maison de Victor Hugo, Musée de la Bibliothèque Nationale de France, Château de Fontainebleau, and MAD Paris. A valuable dialogue was fostered between the academics and museums within Europe. Thank you to curators, museum professionals and scholars who welcomed us in their respected institutions, shared their knowledge and participated in fruitful discussions – curator Jean-Baptiste Clais from the Musée du Louvre; curator, exhibition commissioner and co-director of Asia Collections Network - Europe Arnaud François Bertrand; Lise Mész, in charge of the development of Villa Guimet, Research centre; curator Claire Déléry and curator Cristina Cramerotti from Musée national des arts asiatiques - Guimet; cultural officer Katia Thomas from Musée d’Ennery, Musée national des arts asiatiques - Guimet; curator Julien Rousseau from Musée du quai Branly - Jacques Chirac; curator Mael Bellec from Musée Cernuschi; director of heritage and collections Barbier Muriel from Château de Fontainebleau. Thank you to our co-directors Iside Carbone and Arnaud François Bertrand , and especially our host and president of Asia Collections Network - Europe Antoine Gournay, for putting together such a wonderful programme. Since the foundation of Asia Collections Network - Europe, its members have connected and interacted with each other mostly online. This week, with the support of Culture Moves Europe and the kind hospitality of Centre de Recherches sur l’Extrême Orient de Paris – Sorbonne, a group of us is finally meeting in person in Paris to develop and strengthen our network, to learn from each other and to engage with colleagues working with Asian collections in France. On the second day of our gathering in Paris, we shared our experiences and research with an interested audience of museum professionals, academics, and students in the Workshop: Asian Objects in European Collections. ✨ EXHIBITION HIGHLIGHT ✨ “Beauties, Ghosts and Samurai” at the National Gallery of Art in Vilnius, Lithuania until 13 October 2024. The exhibition showcases the impact of pop culture of the Edo period (17th-19th centuries) on the imagination of contemporary Japanese creators. The display features historical ukiyo-e prints, early and contemporary manga, excerpts from anime films, and multiple works by renowned contemporary Japanese artists. 📣 CALL FOR PAPERS 📣 The European Association for Asian Art and Archaeology (EAAA) has announced a call for papers for the 4th EAAA Conference to be held at the School of Arts and Humanities – University of Lisbon (Portugal) between 8 and 13 September 2025. 📚 PUBLICATION HIGHLIGHT 📚 The book Chinese Numismatics: the World of Chinese Money, by Helen Wang, François Thierry and Lyce Jankowski, with an introduction by Joe Cribb (London: Spink, 2022) has been awarded the prestigious Lhotka Memorial Prize, 2024 edition, by the Royal Numismatic Society. This is the first book to explore the history of the field of Chinese numismatics from both Eastern and Western perspectives, focusing on the study of Chinese numismatics in the 19th century and, crucially, on how to think about Chinese money. In Currencies of Ancient China from their Origins to the Late Empire, François Thierry notes how Europeans sometimes understood Chinese money and sometimes got it completely wrong. In Numismatic Friendship: Social Networks of Numismatists and Coin Collectors During the Late Qing Dynasty, Lyce Jankowski opens up the world of Chinese collectors of Chinese coins, their networks and motivations. In A Short History of Chinese Numismatics in Western Languages, Helen Wang surveys publications to 1900, giving information about the authors, their occupations, motivations and areas of interest; and in Chinese Money Matters, So Why Does It Have Such a Low Profile?, she looks at the current situation, and offers routes into the field. 📢 NEWS 📢 MITA (International Museum of Antique Carpet) opened its doors in Brescia (Italy) in October 2023. The new museum is devoted to the preservation, study and display of more than 1300 textiles from the 15th to the beginning of the 20th century. Most of the carpets were manufactured in Persia, Anatolia, the Caucasus, Central Asia, India, China and Japan. This varied and invaluable collection, gathered by entrepreneur and connoisseur Romain Zaleski, is considered the most complete private collection of antique carpets in the world. The museum is also the venue of the new cultural centre of the Tassara Foundation, a space of intergenerational and intercultural dialogue where a wide and diverse public is invited to engage. Temporary exhibitions are accompanied by events, such as concerts and lectures, that offer insights on various aspects of Asian cultures and reflections on encounters between East and West, between tradition and contemporaneity. 📢 NEWS 📢 The Working Group on Provenance and Decolonisation (ProDe), recognised by ICOM Italy in the autumn of 2023, intends to bring attention to the biography of objects with non-European geographical origins from America, Asia, Africa and the Pacific, which are now part of Italian museum collections. The operational and affiliated members will work together in order to initiate a systematic exchange between museum professionals and other actors in Italy - cooperating at the same time with partners abroad - on the topic of provenance research and decolonisation. The main aim is to achieve transparency in the management and communication of the collections concerned.
