  • ASU Chinese professor killed his wife and had a fierce quarrel before the incident! At around 6:30 pm on the 17th (Saturday), ASU Business School professor David Zhu shot and killed his wife after a fierce argument at home. Their two children were home at the time of the incident. He has been at ASU for ten years and is a Professor and Dean's Council Distinguished Scholar in the Department of Management and Entrepreneurship in the School of Business. According to police, Zhu had a history of domestic violence. The couple's children, ages 19 and 14, both cooperated with detectives and gave testimony about frequent domestic violence between their parents over the years. Both the son and daughter heard screaming and fighting, as well as two gunshots coming from the home at the time of the murder. After the shooting, one of Zhu's children ran out of the home and asked a neighbor to call 911. Zhu himself called 911 and said the shooting was "accidental," court records show, and he later told police he was trying to shoot the wall behind his wife. Investigators reported in the records that "neither of the children expressed any surprise that David shot their mother." He is currently charged with first-degree murder, and his bail is set at $1 million. 😅

  • Six people died of cyanide poisoning in a Bangkok hotel; the suspect was one of the dead. 😅 Bangkok Police Chief Thiti Sangsawang confirmed that the six deceased were three men and three women, all of Vietnamese descent. Two of them were American citizens, and four were Vietnamese citizens. Thai police said the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) was assisting in the investigation. The hotel's last contact with the six people was during room service on Monday (July 15) afternoon, when a staff member handed food to a woman, and surveillance video showed others arriving subsequently. A group of people were found dead in the room on the evening of Tuesday (July 16). No one left during this time, and there were no other visitors. Sangsawang said there were four bodies in the living room and two bodies in the bedroom. Two of them appeared to try to reach for the door but fell before they could get it. According to interviews with relatives of the deceased, the deceased had a dispute over investment debt, and the gathering may have been intended to resolve the dispute. Trairong Piwpan, head of the Thai Police Forensic Department, added that a mass suicide was unlikely because some of the victims had already arranged follow-up itineraries, such as tour guides and drivers. Moreover, the bodies of the deceased were found in different places in the hotel room, indicating that they did not deliberately take poison and then wait to die together.

  • Updates on China's space journey: Amidst the ongoing space races and the constant expansion of aerospace innovation, a Chinese space rocket tragically exploded in the first week of July. Beijing's Tianlong-3 rocket, which shares performance characteristics with SpaceX's Falcon 9, suffered a structural failure. However, it landed safely in Gongyi. The Tianlong-3 and the Falcon 9 emphasize using reusable rockets to reduce costs and emissions. While these trials and tests are common in space engineering, they also heighten the competition between nations. #BeijingTianbingTechnology #Aerospace #AsiaPolicyInstitute #China

  • This week, the California legislature passed a bill making a financial literacy course a mandatory requirement for graduation. In 2022, the National Endowment for Financial Education conducted a survey that shed light on Americans’ relationship with personal finance. An overwhelming 85% of respondents felt that financial education should be a required part of high school curriculum. With this legislation, California becomes the 26th state to enact a law focused on financial education. The implementation of such policies across various states emphasizes the importance of financial knowledge. These measures aim to combat financial illiteracy and reduce wealth gaps in the future. #FinancialLiteracy #California #AsiaPolicyInstitute #Finance

  • Recently, a tragedy in Tamil Nadu, India, claimed 53 lives due to the consumption of toxic bootleg alcohol containing methanol. The victims, primarily laborers, fell ill after buying the illicit liquor from local stores, packaged in small pouches. The village of Karunapuram was particularly devastated, with over a dozen fatalities. This ongoing issue is often driven by prohibition policies and the high cost of legal alcohol, leading people to resort to unsafe alternatives. Similar incidents have occurred in other Indian regions, including Assam, Uttar Pradesh, and Punjab, in recent years. Authorities are currently investigating the source of the tainted alcohol and cracking down on the illegal trade, but a long-term solution to this recurring problem remains elusive. #TamilNadu #Prohibition #AsiaPolicyInstitute
